Maille and the gym

Post by Ulric »

I have a dilemma. I want a new suit of maille(haubergeon and chausses), but have just started to hit the gym.

How would you deal with ordering maille when you know your body will be changing size..but are unsure of what degree?

I can think of two ways around it... either to get riveted maille and spare rings/rivets so it can be resized as needed - at the price of higher weight of maille and greater $ cost, or to get welded maille and have it sized larger than currently needed in certain areas.

anyone have thoughts?

I'd go large, if you can afford. The difference in weight shouldn't be enough to be a problem (especially if you're putting on muscle).

How much weight are you planning on loosing? That is a big factor. Will you be loosing weight mostly around your gut or will you be loosing much around your chest?

The main measurement of your hauberk will be chest & shoulders, where men generally carry less fat. Unless you have big man boobs those measurements will not change drastically.

For a big investment like welded mail, I would see how the weight loss goes for a bit first.

How much gym time are you planning to put in? Hour long sessions 3times a week, half cardio and half weights?

5 days a week, 2 hour sessions, almost entirely weights?

How much of your lifting is 'low rep, high weight' (for size) and how much is 'high rep, low weight' (toning).

Unless you're going the steroid route (massive numbers of OTC pills can have the mental/phsyical effects as steroids without testes shrinkage), or have an insane workout schedule, I don't think your muscles will gain significantly in size in the next few months (I was warned once, don't expect to see any changes for at least 2 months).
However, if you're a bit of a butterball, you could easily shed a few inches in your pudgy regions as you convert it to muscle in a short amount of time.

Anyway, that's my .02, having seen people spend months with working out being their only form of entertainment.

The great thing about maille is that you can easily increase or decrease the size of it.

That's why I like butted maille. Buy it three sizes too large and then adjust it to your needs.
There is no such thing as too large maille ^^

Here's what you shouldn't do...erm...the story is about a friend of mine...

1) Send weldedchainmail.com your measurements while you are in a workout lull.

2) Have him make it just to your size (accidentally, I-uh my friend thought he would make it bigger).

3) Right around when you get your brand-spanking-new mail, start working out again.

4) Realize it's getting harder to put the mail on and take it off.

5) Weep.

Weight gain is not determined by what you do in the gym, it is about diet.

Train hard, eat well (and not too much) and you will get stronger (microfibular hypertrophy) without your muscles growing much (sarcoplasmic hypertrophy).

If you also throw in a few conditioning routines (100 burpee challenge, sprint intervals etc) then you can target more than one aspect of the muscle and become a physical beast in terms of strength, power and conditioning without becoming huge.

Why do I suspect this isn't just testing your ability to get through the alphabet 4 times on a single soda??

Your version would be less vomit-inducing. :D

I have absolutely no idea what that means! Is it an American expression?

He's talking about burping the alphabet. It may be a uniquely American phenomenon.

It can be done but don't stand infront of the person doing it. :D
