I've seen some weapons that were like that at Pennsic. What is that?

The half has probibly been rubbed with some wood stain or linsead oil.
or it could be the camera light/angle.

That looks just like some rattan that I experimentally stained with wood stain. I'm pretty sure it's stained. The surface has that look to it as well. It makes axe and mace hafts look more like wood and less like . . . well, rattan!

Baron Alejandro has - or had - a war-hammer whose haft he not only shaped and stained, but engraved a slogan or motto into the flattened sides. One of the best-looking SCA pole weapons I've ever seen.

i have used Mixwax polyshades gel stain with good success. Get a very dark one. I used antique walnut, and it was still kinda light. Took several coats to darken it.

I still have it. I only use it against people whom I dislike, since the thing hits like a Mack truck.

I used gel stain on the skin of the rattan, a pro-tip given to me by a pro; Syr Justus de Tyre of Atlantia, who is a professional woodworker in real life.

That's my work. It's actually stained with brown leather dye. I'm doing that to most of my hafted weapons now.

It's still available, if you want it.
