Congratulations, Samuel. You sort of beat me to the punch. I too have just been offered admittance into the Order of Chivalry and hope to have my elevation on the battlefield at Estrella Saturday morning, with a Fri night vigil. I would also be interested in hearing any words of wisdom the Chivalry here might offer.
My email is ian-j@pacbell.net.

Samuel, do you know anything yet about time and place for your ceremony/vigil?

Greetings to one and all,

I beg forgiveness for my intrusion.

While I have not gained the right to buckle on spurs or white belt, I would offer a bit of writing which I believe you both may find of value.

Perhaps you have read it in the past.
A Dialog on Chivalry

Thank you for your time and congats to both of you.

To Samuel and Iian,
A word.
After the belt, spurs, and chain are place upon you, you are the same person you were 24 hours ago. Continue to do what you been doing. Not what you think people now think you should do.

And congradulations. Also Peers are people too they need hugs, kisses, chocolate and occasionall a swift kick in the butt.

To the esteemed (soon to be) ex-squires I offer the heart felt felicitations and cogratulations to you. All the advice that you will receive from the chivalry will be be good the caveat is in the form of a quote from George Bernard Shaw "All animals are created equll, just some animals are more equal than others." PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THIS TEMPTATION.

Once again congrats

<<George Bernard Shaw "All animals are created equll, just some animals are more equal than others">>

Uhm
not to be a nit pick

But thats George Orwell from Animal Farm, Napolean (sp?) has that amended to the Animal farm "constitution"

Not Shaw

Congrats Samuel!!!!!!!! Our circle will be stronger with you in it! Did he offer it at Caerte Midwinter? I knew it was coming but I didnt know when. Damn I wish I had come up. It is a real drag that your Lady is out of the country at this very cool time. Is she going to be back in time? Will your actual Vigil be at Estrella too? If so when and where?

Thanks to you Sir Aelric, I will do my best to prove your words. It was at Cearten 12th night. My wife was present, she left sunday to Texas for OR nurse school. Had she not been present I would have been disappointed in those around me for not insuring she was there:-) my Vigil will be at Estrella war, so far the discussion is leaning to friday night vigil, Thursday my wife is flying in and I need to pick here up and bring her to site. friday Morn we are heading into town for confession (damndable SCA religion rules;-) before I begin my vigil. and Saturday Knighting TENATIVLY.. nothing in stone yet on dates.Laura will come to Estrella war for the week and then goes back to Texas for school.

BTW who do I have to armwrestle now to Be a M.O.M :-) HINT HINT ( FYI the tourney Company here in the Outlands known as Knights of St. Martin have these super cool chains of state that have an "M" and a white belt in circle on them and look like the word MOM written out, just so you know the joke)

Hi Sam,

You said...

friday Morn we are heading into town for confession (damndable SCA religion rules;-)

The SCA rules dont prohibit you from performing or participating in a religous rite on site, just that the rite can't be performed in a manner suggesting sponsership by the SCA, or in a manner that forces people to participate (like in court).

When I had my vigil, I had a real priest (actually a Presbetarian minister, who plays SCA)who assisted me in all sorts of religous rites, including a "pilgrimage" around the site, confession, penance, and communion. All those that had gathered for the start of the vigil were told this was a private matter and that they could stay, go, participate or not as they pleased. Almost everyone stayed, and most shared communion with me.

All in all, I'm very glad I did it, for many reasons.

PS: Congrats y'all!

Your Majesty

It does you great credit that your fair kingdom is so tolerant of Sir Samuel's _preriod_ devotion to our Holy Church.

There are many that have complained of those in the SCA targeting those who take seriously the charge of being "defender of the Faith" for ridicule and hostility. I have personally seen this on a few accasions. This problem seems less common in those Kingdoms like your noble land and my homeland of Meridies.

But you can see where he might wish to simply aviod the problem.

I am very pleased to see a Soverign so at ease with the presence of the religous elements of the period Knightly vigil.

respectfully
ld Murdock

_Sir_ Samuel

I can now call you the title which you have deserved for so long. From what I know of you from this board and from mutual friends, you have been a knight in spirit and actions for a long time.

I know all of White Tower is rejoicing for you.

Artemisian Coronation took place over this weekend, Samuel made the trek from Dragonspine to Loch Salann with his Baron and Baroness. It is not very often that I hear so many comments about a relatively unknown visiting squire. From the Artemisian Chivalry, to the nobility, to the general populace. Comments like, "He is a joy to watch fight" and "he carries himself very well." I've read about Samuel here on the archive for probably about two years now, but I was very happy to see him in real life. I feel like you cannot get a true measure of a person from the internet alone. In the short time I was around Samuel he presented himself in every way as a Peer. I had the pleasure of fighting him as well, and from the short and time pressed exchanges we had and his other virtues that were obvious to all, I felt he richly deserved to be in the Order that I am graced enough to be in. I thought that this inter-kingdom perspective should be noted. Samuel is not a Knight of the Outlands, he is a Knight of the Society.

I too had the opportunity of crossing swords with Lord Samuel during the King's champion tournamnet this past weekend, and I would count him as a most capable foe. Although I was somewhat occupied during most of the day, I was able to watch some of his bouts with my trusted friend Sir Gregory. Lord Samuel shows the skill and demenor of a warrior worthy of Knighthood, and our Order will be enriched by his recognition. I hope to find my way into his vigil where I might be able to share some the advice I was imparted by others wiser than myself.

Hail Chivalry!!!

It is nice to see people praising Samuel like this. I know that Myles would not have kept him as a squire for so long had he not been a serious and worthy man.
Sam, I know that you wanted this with all of your heart. I could feel your passion and devotion shining through your writings. I salute the steadfastness that you showed during your hours of darkness. If only I could believe the way you believe!! Pray for me, worthy knight. Ask God to forge me into something that resembles your worthiness!

Vitus,
Im squired to Sir Giovanni, OP, Baron of Dragonsspine, now but still a part of the White tower.

Those prayers have been long answered.... now its just time for the Midrealm Chivalry to see and take in thier brother..

BTW an important lesson I've learned. Poking them in the eyes dont help thier vision:-)Best book ever to purchase and read on the toilet " the order of chivalry" Geoffrey De Charny. ( I say read it on the toilet simply due to few people come to disturb a man on the John ;-)

Sir Gregor and Baron Konrad where kind enough to leave out the part of my helm gettin rocked:-) Thanks to you both, I welcome you all to come friday night for the vigil.. and the saturday night celebration...

This is not my usual forum, but by loving husband was kind enough to email notice of this discusion. I have been aware of the archive for years...reading over Samuel's shoulder and such. I just want to personally thank all who have responded with such kind words for Samuel. He has always been my "knight in shining armor" and now the rest of part of our world are recognizing him too. Being separated during the special time has and continues to be very difficult for me. The missives posted here let me know that even apart he continues to bring me honor.
