Found it at a gun and knife show this weekend and am not sure what to call it other than "a dagger of some type"
Any ideas on what it is?[/img]

the bastard offspring of a Roundel and a Holbein with a touch of Bubba? In my professional opinion

I would describe it as a highly evolved shank.

Its African...though where in Africa I'm not sure. Sorry I can't be more specific.

I had a feeling it was african...but I'll be damned if I can figure out where.
In any case, it was $12 and after am hour or so with a file, it now holds a damn good edge, figured it would make a nice little utility knife for events...

North African I think. Maybe Tuareg? Only 'maybe" though, because knives are wonderful trade goods, and get made for other markets all the time.
Could easily pass for something 15th century or later.

Sudan.
That is a Sudanese dagger, which was apparently sold all over North Africa, just like swords were sold all over Europe.
Read this thread carefully...

oh wow...thanks Glaukos. Didn't realize how good a deal I had gotten.
Wish mine looked as good as some of those, but hey I'm not complaining.

Yes the blade and handle are from sudan, but that scabard looks like a recent addition. The lacing on the side and the carvings are not like anything I have seen from that region.

I should have said that I knew the sheath was newer.
