Greetings to those who would take up arms in the pursuit of sport

We are currently compiling a roster of tournamenters who may be interested in participating in WorldJoust Tournaments events. To update our records and make sure our list is complete, we are posting this general invitation to established competitors, up and coming competitors and competitors who are new to the circuit.

WorldJoust Tournaments events are organized and run by Jeffrey Hedgecock and Gwen Nowrick. Although our events are usually affiliated with the International Jousting League (IJL), we are the sole owners and producers of our events, and we establish and enforce our own standard for armour, kit and skill. WorldJoust Tournaments are the only jousting/combat events outside of the UK sanctioned by England's Royal Armouries Museum.

Our next event will be the Tournament of the Phoenix, 2010, which will be held on October 22, 23, and 24, 2010 in Poway (north San Diego County, California, USA). More information on this event is detailed below.

About WorldJoust Tournaments events

Tournaments are run in the tradition of those outlined by Rene of Anjou, and participation in the following events are required to qualify for the prize:

-Jousting- (medium density balsa tips which require a hard, solid strike to break.)

-Foot combat (with hard rubber headed pollaxe and/or longsword)

-Mounted club or rebated sword melee

-Military skill at arms

Events are usually held at the Poway Valley Rider's Association, 14336 Tierra Bonita, Poway, CA 92064. The Tournament of the Phoenix 2010 will be held at this location.

Requirements for participation

In an effort to present visually spectacular events, the 'theme' for our events are the mid-late 15th C. Europe. To participate in a WorldJoust Tournaments event, applicants are required to have equipment and kit of a recognizable mid-late 15th C. European appearance:
* Full plate armour (historically accurate, of a reasonably high quality)

* Appropriate ecranche (shield)

* Full caparison of period appropriate design (full cover, closed back)

* Crest of period appropriate design

*Banner- 3' x 3' with loops on top and one side to accept a banner pole)

* Clothing and accessories of appropriate design and colours (historically accurate, of a reasonably high quality)

Complete information about appropriate equipment and standards may be found in the "Rules" heading on the WorldJoust Tournaments website. If you have questions as to whether your equipment is acceptable, you are very welcome to ask and/or forward a photo. We are happy to discuss this with you.

Compensation

Competitors will receive a travel allowance, transportation, accommodations and most meals for the duration of the event. Competitors will also be treated as honoured guest during their stay.

Darn! I really should go and live up to my jousting ambitions...
I'm just too busy with my day job right now and the travel distances are just nagging me. I really ought to get my driver's licence in 2010 and get back on a horse ASAP. :x :x :x

I SO like to get into that list and fight with the guys who've been a great inspiration to get me to my goals thusfar and get the snot beaten out of me.
You just don't happen to need more ground crew and an extra challenger for the foot tournament, would you...

At least not one from the other side of the world, I reckon..

Kaos, we've had ground crew from all over the world (Seattle, Texas, New York, Canada, England, Belgium, New Zealand). I can't pay you to attend, but I can generally arrange to put you up and feed you, especially if you have your own kit.

The foot combat is the purview of the competitors, but if you ride, the skill at arms is open to all qualified competitors, and counts toward your IJL ranking.

Dates for next year are ctober 22,23 and 24. Have a think about it, and if you can manage it, I'd love to have you over. I wish I had the funding to bring your fire show over, you guys look amazing.

Alas, my riding skills aren't even close to par, but hopefully one day they will be. First I need to dedicate myself fully to it, which at this point I cannot.
This year is the year of my renewed dedication to the fighting arts, hopefully this will be part of it.

I'll keep you updated on October. Probably I can manage to get the days off, and I can probably save the money for the travel. I must attend this event someday.
I'm happy to hear I can help out, if I can manage to attend.

Jeffrey Forgeng will be back in 2010, and at past events he and some of the guys have had fun playing around with sparring and foot combat. In the days leading up to the event there is usually/always someone standing around who wants to have a go with the weapons. If you bring armour and joust, there's always room in the practice for another rider. Participating in the pre-event practice is a fantastic way to find out how you measure up against the big guys.

2010 will be the Order of the Crescent against 5 challengers 'a la St. Inglevert. It's going to rock. 8)

Actually jousting is too soon for me, but the foot combat sounds nice!
2010 looks like to become a pretty exciting season already, but this makes it really swell. I hope the economy allows me to buy a plane ticket by then.
Let's hope there will be enough work for us to do here to make the trip. :)

The set-up for the tournament sounds really good.

Knight School- Knightly Combat and Jousting

We're also planning a more informal Open Practice Day once a month as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer. Email Jeffrey if you're interested- info[at]knightschool.us

Gwen,

What days is your pre-event practice going to be?

I'd like to come out and ground crew and participate in the skill at arms if possible.

If only you guys were about 24 hours driving distance closer. 34 hours is a bit beyond my limit and definitely beyond my horse's limit.

We work the horses twice a day for the month leading up to the event. People usually start arriving the weekend before, and we start unofficial practices as soon as people start arriving, as competitors want to get used to their assigned horses. Official pre-event practices on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the event. Thursday is setup, and if we can fit in a practice we do. Friday, Sat & Sunday are the event.

If you're serious about coming out, email me at gwen[at]historicenterprises and we'll chat about getting you signed up with the IJL and stuff. 8)

You wouldn't consider late 14thC or very early 15thC harness? St Inglevert was 1390 after all. You know you want to... Otherwise I will have to wait until I win the lottery ;)

Tournament of the Phoenix will always be mid 15th C. because that is our period of interest. We have plans in the works for additional WorldJoust events with different 'theme' periods, sponsored by various associates and held in different parts of the US and other countries. 14th C. is on the top of the list, then 16th C. Watch the WorldJoust site for an announcement in the next couple of weeks.

WorldJoust events are not reenactments, they are historical sporting events. 2010 will be a pas d'arms [in the style of] St. Inglevert, not a reenactment of St. Inglevert.
