Just wondering what everyone thought of GW X?
likes, dislikes, etc.

for me, I got there on Thursday and helped marshal the res/Ravenne battle, that was a blast, and fought in all the major battles Friday and Saturday those were very enjoyable as well. over all from a participants point of view I had a good time.

to any Trimarian archers who may be on the list, please understand that I mean this in the best possible way, but for the record I would like to say : I hate you all.
(this comes from jogging 70 yards across a field, to get hit with a crossbow bolt to the eye slot 5 yards from the enemy line)

as for the armor I saw, well, lets just say I saw everything you would expect in a big war, plastic crappy looking armor, to really great period looking rigs. but I've developed a new pet peeve, looking across the field to see someone who's wearing plastic doesn't bother me so much as it does some of you, some people cant afford, and/or don't have the time to make a period looking rig, what burns me now is looking across the field at a guy in a great looking suit of armor, a sharp helm, blue jeans, T-shirt, and WHITE NIKE tennis shoes! that killed me all weekend, everywhere I turned I saw it, only 2 people (I saw) had all 3 of them going, but there were several that had 1 or 2 of them going, I know armor standards are different everywhere, but come on that was just sad, its the only visual thing that really brought my time on the field down, what brought me down even more were some of these people were Knights and higher, just the people who are supposed to set the example for at least attempting to _look_ period on the field. I dont mind looking across the field to see someone who's _trying_ but just isnt quite there yet, what I cant stand is to look across at someone who's worked hard and made or worked hard for the money to buy a nice rig, and has now put it on and come out to the field planning to challenge me, quite obviously, to a 100 YARD DASH!

On the opposite end, I would like to say that there were several people I saw out there, from Kings, all the way down to a guy wearing a very nice suit of milanese (sp) plate, that I met who had only been authorized for about a month.

I'd be with ya there, if i did'nt se so many really long time vets out there is really really bad kits. Conversly some of the best rigs are on guys that have been in for only a couple of years or less.

OMG yes i hate that! I mean com on it's not like it's hard to find shoes that aren't nikes! And as you'll notice it's the same guys all the time.

Also it is really irritating to look at a budwiser t shirt in the line.

Course this year was on of the best looking Gulf Wars i can remeber, esp from Meridies, we looked pretty good. Much less duct tape and hope on the field.
Almost no visible plastic. I saw no blue plastic.
I did se a ton of mail, some of it rivited. That is something i never thought to see here.

Some guy was in a cowboy hat everytime i saw him out of armour. There were still some spun tops and other things. Too much rust imo ect ect.

BUT i did not see what i saw at my second Gulfwars. A guy in exposed hockey gear and plastic, in camo pants and nikes wearing a Metallica T shirt. All of which clased greatly with his white belt.

We are doing a great deal better, we still can do more.

My gripes....
Guy with a full set of gothic plate look at the helmet, his sallet had a bargrill bevor. That sucked.

The guy with the happyface print surcote(little happy faces all over it).

The guy in the flame orange surcote.

The person, couldn't figure out if it was man or woman. With the back and white cow pattern egg armor.

On the other hand, I saw a knight walking around in a cotehardie with chausses laced with points to his braies. Upon closer inspection he was wearing turn shoes. Very nice.

I saw quite a few very nice rigs. Overall I think that there were far too many spuntop wrapbacks and too many bargrills on helmets that could and should have had a period closed face.

With some glaring exceptions, I saw little plastic, and none of it blue.

Well, I did want to take this opportunity to appologize to everyone. During the ravine battle, I did something to my foot. I don't know what it was, but it felt almost like a fracture. It was not. So during the field battles the next day, I indeed wore white sneakers. I'd have at least worn black, but that's not what I own. They provided me much more arch support for my sore foot than my campaign boots. I was back to the boots the next day for the fort battles, even tho it hurt a bit, but I just couldn't sacrifice the ability to use my feet.

I think that the overall appearance was quite high.

Not at all, Janos. I was extremely happy to see actual true chausses and braes on the battlefield.

I mean, they were only the most popular form of leg covering and method of holding on armor for the majority of the "high" middle ages. Too many people in that period (including myself) are still at the sweatpants stage.

Generally, I would agree with you. But, the guy had on a short red cotehardie and chausses. The braies were white and clearly visible from 40 yards away. The turnshoes are what I actually had look for to see.

What annoys me (at Estrella) was seeing the nice armour, blue jeans and tennis shoes, not only on a knight, but his squires as well. It's one thing to wear tennis shoes, but a knight should know better, let alone not encourage his household to do the same.

In fact if you were hurt, i would have told you to take a day off and not risk it buddy. Don't want tyou to actually get injured.

We can make exceptions for the extreme cases. But what we're talking bout is the guys that do it all the time.

Well, once I determined that it was merely a strain and that I was in pain but not "hurt" I knew I'd be fine in my running shoes. Had it been a "real" injury, I'd have stayed off the field. I've been lauded by chiurgeons in the past for my intelligent withdrawl when it looked like I might be over-reaching physically. I don't mess with my health. Better to not fight today and be able to fight tomorrow rather than to try today, fail and lose tomorrow and the next day.

That would probably be Iain - he taught me to do exactly that - wait until they just get to the line, then shoot them. He usually goes for the eyes, too. I'm more of a center-of-mass person.

Yes Sir Malcolm, that is what your shield is for, and thats what I was using mine for, the statment is refering was a testament to how good the aim of the archers were I had my shield in a spot so i could see and still charge (safely) and they got the shot in at the one spot to still hit me in the face. but as you suggest Sir, I will simply cover my face with my shield next time and charge blindly next time. ;P

Good Man! And just for the record you can lay your sword about and inch across the top of your shield and look trough the gap between the shield and sword and not get shot. But I like the blind charge thing too. Sounds gross.
