In Modo Antiquo
In Modo Anitiquo
After three decades of researching and recreating "knightly" foot combat within the context of SCA tournaments, our understanding of how tournaments on foot were held as widened considerably. There is a greater general understanding about what armour was worn, the weapons that were usually employed and the appearance of noble combatants on the field than ever before.
Today it is possible to go to many tournaments and observe combatants in highly accurate recreations of arms and armour of a particular time period. Dedicated individuals have driven this movement, finding that, to them, combat in more historical armour is both more enjoyable and more fulfilling, while benefiting all who attend our tourneys by deepening the medieval experience.
Over the past decade, we have also found many ways in which our actual combats can safely be brought closer to the experiences of noble knights and squires we seek to emulate. Whether through such conventions as counted blows, armour as worn, or others, many of our combatants have found that combat in a more historical manner, is more satisfying and enjoyable to them. The difficulty has been, that unlike historical armour, historical combat must of needs be a shared experience, and finding an opponent of the same mind is often a greater challenge than the bout itself.
We ask that those who would like to indicate their willingness to fight in a more historical fashion, wear the motto, “In modo antiquo,â€

Back from Gulf Wars, and finally catching up with work. Sorry it took so long to get back.
The final version appears above. If you want to appear as a signatory, either post the request in this thread (please delete your post once you are on) or email me asbjorneh@hotmail.com, I’d like to include your kingdom as well if you don’t object. Gaston, since you worked so hard on this I’d like to have you as second signatory, if you don’t mind (please tell me how you want it to appear). Anyone can use the motto, if you abide by the items, you don’t have to sign on. Also if you sign on, your name will appear if I post this to a web site, or another electronic list (probably the Rialto next week), so carefully consider giving your permission. I will of course remove your name if you request.
Feel free to distribute the manifesto as you see fit, but please don’t “bludgeonâ€

Asbjorn Johansen i think this is a quest worth venturing. At the present moment i have a piece of cloth tied around the ricasso of my Zweihander. On it is this word "Rittertum" which in german means chivalry. I would be honored to add the motto "In modo antiquo" next to my "chivalry reminder"
------------------
"As you hear the teuton war cry roll through the hills, you will then see the bear"
Heil Rittertum,
Harold the Bear

Milord Asbjorn, I would be honored. If you'd like a signed hardcopy I would be glad to provide it.
In a separate post on this forum I am collecting signed statements of intent to forward to the Meridian newsletter, Popular Chivalry. Please don't hesitate to participate whether you are in Meridies or not. It is a Society-wide effort, I'm only trying to get a post in Pop Chiv to help get the word out here. As it says in that post, they've been spoofed several times and won't publish without hardcopy documentation.
Many, many thanks Asbjorn, for starting this ball rolling, and for guiding it down its path. Well done, indeed!

I think it is important that the "common man" in the Society voice an opinion on this. If it's only powerful people, it doesn't have the desired effect in my mind.
It isn't a mandated change. It is an offer of something better (better, in my NSHO), and, as such, can be accepted or refused with no consequence.

Harold, Otto, Robert, and Gordon glad to see you are joining us, do you want to be listed as signatories, if so how do you want to be listed? (I just want to be absolutely sure you want to sign, if you just want to use the motto, that’s great too).

Gaston, I listed your kingdom after your name is that ok and are there any titles I should list?

That's fine, if you choose to add my local group, the Shire of Nant-y-Derwyddon, that's fine, too, but not necessary.
I think a simple Gaston du Poitou would be best here, unless you have other thoughts on it.
Again, many thanks.

Otto, Robert and Morgan added.
As always I'm having dificulty making my writing clear (shouldn't have slept throught those writing courses
).
All I need is a request to add you to the list is a clear request to be added, SCA name, any titles you want to include, and your Kingdom if you want to add it.
Can't wait till i see the motto for the first time on the field.
Asbjorn

Given a willing opponent, I'd fight with full body targeting and grappling until a given number of blows were recieved or someone relents.
