First time in two years

Post by Owynn MacKinnon »

I took off the past two years to let my knees heal up from years of running, skiing, and hockey. Stupid me. Last night I felt like I should have never been given my authorization card.

Last night I had the good fortune to to go to my first fighter practice in over two years. Let me just say, I need to relearn everything all over again. My footwork and balance were off. I was tripping over my own feet. I could not block even a shot that I knew was coming & where it was coming from. My leg is nice and bruised from where a knight was just picking at me to try and get me toblock or react.

The big problem that I have is strenthening my shoulders which have always been week. I broke my collar bone when I was 14 right before my major growth spurt and because it was imobilised during that period, the muscles never grew to match.

Needless to say, it's time I got serious. I joind a gym a few months ago and have been going 3 to 4 days a week, trying to rebuild strenght and stamina. I am planning on attending 2 fight practices a week. I want to improve. Tonight, I'm going to get a heavy bag to help me work on hand speed and power (and use as a small pell in my garage).

Actually, in a strange and sick sort of way, it feels really good. Knowing that I am on the road back helps to keep the bruises and swelling from overcoming me and telling me to quit and do something safe like golf or tennis. I was depressed after last night, knowing how far I have to come, but I'm on a natural high today because I had fun.

Owynn,
Good luck on the road back. I've taken a couple of long breaks myself, and am just starting to get the hang of it again now. One thing that's been helping me is that even though I stopped fighting over the breaks, I didn't stop _thinking_ about fighting. I found myself reviewing fights in my head; trying to figure out what worked and what didn't. Now that I'm back, I think my ability to understand what's happening in a fight, and to conciously change how things turn out, has improved a lot.

I've had to take time off for things, life is funny that way. My longest time off included my helm getting stolen, and my armor rotting over a winter wile it was stored under the back porch. Thus I found myself without armor, and looking at having to re-teach my body to move. I had about decided to just walk away, as I have more hobbies and a LOT of young kids.

Then by chance, Vitus e-mailed me out of the blue just to say hello. His questions made me think, and the next thing I new, I was in the workshop building armor and buying the cheapest helm I could find.

I don't know what was worse there for a wile, my shots or the crap that I had thrown together to use as "armor". God, I looked stupid. I was ashamed to wear my belt on it, and for a wile I even refused to put it on. Thinking about the cost, I was ready to give up again, when the little elf started encouraging me again. Before long, I had new arms and legs (mostly thanks to Vitus), and he even got my wife to surprise me with a Sugar Loaf Helm for Christmas. A very nice Sugar Loaf at that.
I've moved to Evansville, IN and the guys here are hard core fighters. My fighting is about 80% of what it use to be, and I've picked up a couple of new things as well.
Mundane life still seems run by Puck, but things are starting to settle down.

Thanks Vitus.

What in gods' name is the deal with this VITUS guy? Taking oaths, doing penance, apologizing for wrongdoing, helping new & old alike with wonderful words of wisdom, & NOW, HE'S HELPING YOU, TOO? DOES IT _NEVER_ STOP!?!

Next thing I'll here is Vitus brokering a permanent peace in the middle east & the balkans, while simultaneously bring the planets into alignment, & allowing communication with other star systems. OH THE HUMANITY!!!

Ok, I took that last part from Bill & Ted. But still. I mean, sheesh. We're gonna have to elect this guy to some kind of office so he can stop making us all look bad. Or worse, in my case... Image

Lodur, you almost killed me with your post! You got to be careful! Someone could get hurt. The strange thing is I was thinking the same thing!

In his spare time, Vitus teaches chartered accountancy to troubled youth and nurses sick animals back to health...
