Sabotons/Sollerets - An opinion poll

Post by Micah_Rose »

How many of you wear sabotons/sollerets as part of your kit? Aside from a nice finishing touch to your harness, have you noticed any benefits? Drawbacks? I understand they're great to have when fighting in close quarters, like a bridge or castle.

They'd look really silly on my 1st C. Roman gear.

You did ask.

I wear them, but dont see any real benefits,
unless somebody steps on your toes. The only real drawback, is wearing them in a muddy field, it takes forever to clean all the mud out from between the plates....Otto

Chello!

I plan on getting a pair from Mad Matt sometime this summer. The most typical complaint I've heard is that they're like wearing stell-toed boots...something I've never had a problem wearing. ~shrug~

I almost always wear my sabatons. I love the way they look, and I absolutely don't care what the other, more sport-oriented fighters say about them. They have to be put on right, though, or I wind up tripping over my own toes...

Speaking of which (since no one but Matt is going to answer my post in the Armouring forum).....how DO you put them on right? Straps, laces and points, are they soled, etc.?

I'm stuck making this kit until I get that question solved, and I need it in a week and a half.

Heilsa!

lol, Gaston! I've got my full steel legs and I don't think I'll have them with me at Kinser! (Ask Murdock about my "depressed" b****ing on chat a couple of weeks ago)!

Gaston,

I have a set and love them. I have no problems in large melees or single tourneys with them. They are a nice form of foot protection in bridges and the such. I do not wear them at indoor events all of the time as they can scratch wood floors.

I use a lace point at the toe and a strap under the foot between the heel and the ball of the foot. The toe point raises the tips up for things like running.

Yes, Robert, but I'm one of these guys who has to know exactly where the points go Image

Thanks to all for some great answers. Sorry to be so insistent, but if I don't get my leg harness finished soon I can't try some of the experiments in combat we planned for Kinser. Image

I also finally found a picture of the child's sabaton from Cherbourg that has a pair of points at the toe, and at the top of the instep.
