What are your fighting goals this Pennsic?

Post by Kyle »

What are your goals on the field (or in the woods) this Pennsic? Do you want to be impressive at the Pas? Wear chain storming the castle? Fight one hundred fights with one hundred knights? Put an arrow in the eye of the [king, queen, prince, princess] of the [kingdom, principality] of [-]? What will make your Pennsic complete?

Me, my goal is to next year get on a project that doesn't have a major system demo in early September, so I can go to next Pennsic and make up for lost time. Yeah, somebody send me some gouda so I'll have some cheese with my whine Image .

Well, I am currently a man-at-arms, and my knight has put me on a quest that I have one year to fulfill (well, about 2/3 of a year left now...). I have to fight, and get comments from fifty knights and fifty squires. At Pennsic, I want to advance upon this quest as much as possible. I'll be able to fight people from all over the known world, there aren't many opportunities quite this good.

I am looking forward to all of the battles, and most everything else at Pennsic, as this will be my first. It's sure to be an interesting experience.

Goal 1: To not fight with my kingdom at all for the rest of time.

Goal 2: To have fun (not possible unless goal 1 is attained...)

Goal 3: To poke a bunch of people with my spear.

Goal 4: To not get hit.

Goal 5: To either forget or greatly exaggerate everything that happens on the battlefield because of consumption of mass quantities of beer.

Well, not all of my goals are on the field...but here they are:

1) Fight in the woods battle. Finally.

2) Verify that my yurt is 100% waterproof by surviving The Pennsic Storm(tm). Post-flood I'd like the floor to be bone-dry.

3) Destroy twice as many Rogues this year as last year. Not on the field, but with this year's mead! Image

4) Do really well in at least one battle. Come back with a NSTIW story.

5) Guard the Midrealm gate.

6) Do something notorious enough to get called to Red Spears court. Again. Image

7) Volunteer for more stuff. Maybe a security detail or something like that. Do something to help rather than just taking it all in.

8) Meet more archivers! Image

Seeing as I've been fighting the same 2, 3 other people all year I am going to hit the pick up field big time.

I am hoping to balance the fighter, mom, scribe, etc. roles well enough this year.
Pennsic is SO like drinking from a fire hose.

Hmmmm, my goals for Pennsic? Well, being that this is my first Pennsic, I have quite a few ...

In no particular order:

Fight in as many battles as humanly possible.

Beat the snot out of Dagisd. Just because.

Definitely observing the Tuchux Charity event, as I'm interested in watching [and possibly participating] in their form of combat.

Volunteer for Security shifts, I figure it's a great way to meet people.

Get as many pictures with people/places/things involving my yard gnome -- Lucky the Punk Rock Yard Gnome -- as film will allow. YES, I really do have him and YES, there will be many pictures but NO, he's ceramic, not real -- you freaks. What'd you expect?

Fight in as many battles as humanly possible.

Find a Guinevere or a Tuchux Wench to practice my devious [albeit harmless] lecher skills on.

Meet all the AA folks that I can.

Woods Battle, Woods Battle, Woods Battle!

Shop. What? Yes, SHOP. I heard there's no better event in the Knowne World to do so.

Grab a Penguins jersey from Pittsburgh on my way through ...

Fight in as many battles as humanly possible.

Make and partake in memories that I can tell my kids/family/cat/anyone who'll listen about.

Did I mention the Guinevere/Wench part, yet ... ?

Come on schreiber, fight beside us in at least one battle.

My goals...

1 To try to get my fighters back before pennsic starts so I don't fight for Black Diamond by myself (mundane life and all that).

2 To participate in the Real Plate and Maille Tourney.

3 To squish House Gaping Maw if they happen to get in my way on the field. Image (what do you think of that schreiber?) Image

4 To have a hell of a lot of fun.

1) Fight in every battle I can, especially the Woods Battle, which I missed last time;

2) Demonstrate that you want Meridians on your side when stupid, futile, maniacal action is called for;

3) See how good I can get with my new greatsword, which will be my constant companion;

4) Fight the fair Shameless;

5) Meet other members of the AA, and if possible hit them on the head;

6) Do all this while wearing mail.

Sounds like fun. (Now if only my middle-aged body holds up...)

Seeing as this will be my first Pennsic and probably my first event as an authorized heavy,
1. I wish to fight at least once per day

2. meet as many of you as is possible

3. shop

4. unload a bunch of RR track anvils If I get orders

5. depending on #4 shop some more

6. get drunk with some cool people

7. hopefully not get heat exhaustion

8. see how well my kit holds together

If I win just one fight in the five days I will be there I will be so excited I may sh*t myself.

Pietro -- the Perseids usually peak around August 12. (That is, that's about when we plow through the cloud of cometary debris that gives us such nice meteors.) The Moon will be at third quarter then, so with any luck we'll have decent viewing.

1) To fight everyday as long as my Knight

2) Not to lose my Knight.../be a good man-at-arms

3) To cross blades with as many AA members as I can

4) To have a NSIWT story to tell

5) To try to behave in a lady-like manner and attempt to control myself (this will be HARD with soo many wenches and fighters)

6) To remain in one piece, preferably totally uninjured

7) Have a heck of alot of fun (easiest goal)

Adriano - Image

I will most likely be seen running after the Knight in purple with an exasperated look on my face Image

FYI: Kelley the Shameless will be known as Leah of Newcastle (but I'll always answer to Shame)

Woohoo! One of the finest scenes ever written. I'm trying desperately to make it to Pennsic in time to make this event.

My #1 Goal: To make it there at all! I've missed it the last 3 years due to annoying last-minute mundane conflicts.

After that, to fence as much as possible (I decided not to do heavy this year), and maybe spend some time at Herald's Point.

I heard that pre-registration was at 15,000! Of course, some of that may be people putting in fake registrations in order to hog more space for their camp (reminds me of the people who quadruple-park their precious BMW's...)

Man, I wonder how many fighters will be in the main Field Battle? Nothing like it.

It'll be my first Pennsic, so I'm just keeping my goals simple, same as usual. I want to give each of my opponents the best fight that I can give them.
Something for me to keep working at.

Nope, not even close. It takes 5 spots for me to set up our period pavilions. 4 for the actual pavilions themselves, and the 5th one for the amount you always get shorted at Pennsic. 5 X 60 = $300.00 for 2 people. Someone hogging 2 free spaces instead of 1 free space is just inconveniencing others, not paying for it.

Widow Montoya -- hear, hear. I'll never forget a white-belted opponent who made it clear he thought I was wasting his time, and that he was basically fighting me as an act of charity. (I've rarely taken such wicked pleasure in beating somebody.)

It's good to be reminded of the essence of what (I hope) we're trying to do when we put on our various armours and whack away at each other. As Pieter van Doorn was once quoted in an article about the SCA in Living History magazine, "Without the ideals of chivalry and honor, we'd just be hicks with sticks!" Win or lose, I love being out there among my brother and sister fighters.

Spend as many nights in chat talking to the other folks who again... didn't make it to pennsic...

Try once again, to talk my state representitive into sending a bill to the state house in order to make school start in early september, instead of August 7th... God damn son of bitches!!!!!! Bastards!!!!

If I had known that in becoming a teacher in NC I would have to give up Pennsic for the rest of my life... well...

Lets say I would have chosen a different proffession.

Bastards...

Well folks, thanks for all the responses. The two overriding themes I see here are, "Challenge myself", and "Have fun!", both very worthy goals. While work keeps me away, I'll dream of archivers finding honor on the field, and joy in the night (and you have my permission to take that however you'd like Image ). Broadway, for the rest of us it's "Next year, at Coopers..." Image

Keep 'em coming!

another rapier-wielding herald? Cool. On the field, I'll be wearing a custom Elizabethan jacket in broad diagonals of white and brown. I'll be hanging out with the Fellowship of the Oaken Blade's Secret Weapons crew... Image Hunt me up!

I'm arriving Friday 10 August, camped with Newbridge at the corner of Brewers & Chandler's (as of last year, anyway...)

Bascot -- Possibly I misunderstand the rules and customs regarding registration for Pennsic. It's been my impression that the Land Office disapproves of a group or individual reserving more than one space per person, and considers it an abuse of the system. If that's the case, and you do in fact secure five spaces for two people through some sort of deceptive practice, I'll have to make a mental note never to do business with you.

If, on the other hand, I'm mistaken about that, and they do in fact allow you to take as much space as you're willing to pay for, then I apologize.

-Enjoying every last moment of my time there.
-Lasting long enough in the varius battles to enjoy them.
-Knocking Lucien on his ass...repeatedly. Just because, of course.
-Relishing in the fine sport of wenching.

It's where I pay the piper Image

Red Spears is the barony of Toledo, Ohio I believe. Either my camp (Crunchy Frog) or my friend's camp (Clan Iymec) has been their neighbor for the last 3 or 4 wars. Iymec has the spot this year.

And each year we do something loud, annoying, and funny enough to get called to task for it in their court.

A good example would be when I had the spot, and a campmate of mine had a successful wenching foray. The resulting encounter was...well..loud. Embarrassingly so. Ever see the first Porky's movie? Something like that. So the Baroness' bard wrote a song to commemorate the occasion (entitled "Oh god oh god oh god") and the entire camp, royalty and all, came over and serenaded us in return. Called us to court, and presented our campmate with a makeshift trophy.

Really great people, the best neighbors, and a whole lot of fun. Can't wait to see what trouble we get into this year. Image
