Well, Tybolt, they make you use armour for two reason.
1) Even tho they're boffers, they're not exactly pool noodles. I could jack someone pretty good with a boffer, were I to choose to do so. But then, I'm a 250 pound adult.
2) LOOKS MAN!!!! Sheesh! We're a medieval society. It just wouldn't LOOK right to see kids in Keds, jeans and a t-shirt out there boffering away.

boffers still have a hard core (PVC) so they still can pack a wallop - especially when a mutant freak boy 7 foot tall 15 yr old is fighting one of my puny kids...LOL
plus, as was said, you can't have fighting without armour.
The sca has a history of "colorful" armour, and many people are really realizing the relavance. I see the sca as growing. I don't see a lot of the bad armour that I hear so many stories about. So, by encouraging our youth combatants to strive for period armour, we are encouraging our future crowns to have period armour - those kids gotta grow up.
I really have a lot of hope for the youth combat program and what it will do for the society as a whole in about 5 years.
In Service,
Aidan

Lord Nug is one of the people in the local group I play with. He is an adult, and was playing with boffers, with another adult. He took a thrust to the face and the PVC core slid inside the boffer hitting him in the front tooth. Broke the tooth off. He is now active in the youth fighter program, and has used his errr... knowledge? to help prevent this from happening in the youth program. (Please note the tooth was damaged before.)
The image of a 300# man getting his tooth knocked out with a boffer is still kinda funny. He even came back after that. That is why you wear armour with boffers.

Aidan Cambel, who's kid you calling a mutant freak? hehehe
My son does Whale-Bone (PVC), but when we fight he used full heavy armor (we have found that head shots break the PVC, so "don't aim for the head".
Master Nim, are you fighting Boffer foam style or PVC style?

i understand armour for looks, just didnt enderstand why it was mandatory. i supose i do now.
also i wa sunder the impression that boffers were like pool noodle things with a handle and that the padded pvc core was something else again. i know how hard those can hit, fight my little bro with em all the time, he likes to aim for the cup. nuff said.

We have Boffer and Whale-Bone. Boffer is pool noodle with PVC handle..fight without armor.
Whale-Bone is PVC (up to 6 foot long) capped at both ends, strapping tape, 3/8" foam insulation around that. AMROR IS REQUIRED. Full armor, cause those things can put a hurting on you....BUT
at An Tir/West War my son went to camps to fight with other kids, they fought with Whale-Bone weapons, but didn't wear armor. Touch and dead, no head shots. Still lots of fun to be had by all.
