Duke Darius resigned?

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Duke Darius resigned?

Post by Zygmunt Nadratowski »

I just caught this from the BOD minutes:

"John W. Haren (Darius Aurelius Serpentius) Resignation from the Order of Chivalry."

What happened?

I hope I am not speaking out of turn. I saw similar but do not know why. This is what I noticed from the OoP:
*Darius Aurelius (Serpentius, was: Gunther de Milo; the Disciple; Pathwarden)
09/27/2003 Duke
09/28/2002 Count
08/01/2009 Master of Arms
01/02/1993 Knight (resigned)
10/26/1991 Companion of the Tygers Combattant
10/27/1990 Award of Arms
04/01/1995 Queen’s Order of Courtesy
08/16/2002 Augmentation of Arms (Middle)
09/24/2005 Foreign Tyger
04/12/2008 King's Cypher (Andreas III)
10/03/2009 King's Cypher (Andreas IV)

It's probably his resignation so he could be made a Master of Arms. Which happened last year... not sure if what you're reading is something new or not...

In something of a reverse of what HG Lucan did some time back, Darius realized that Knighthood no longer fit the reality of his involvement in the SCA. He resigned his Knighthood. Subsequently the Crown chose to offer him a return to membership in the Order of Chivalry as a Master.

I know he occasionally browses these pages, perhaps he will see this thread and explain further himself.

Edit to add that he accepted the Crown's offer.

Ah, this makes sense. I was sad to think that he, who had been so kind to me on the fencing list at Pennsic last year, would now be gone. Glad to see I am mistaken. :)

I sat and chatted with Big D about this at Pennsic. He had a great explanation, and it made perfect sense. That, and he's just so CUDDLY!

He can explain if he wishes. But relax folks, he's not going anywhere.

I knew this was coming well in advance and was told "You didn't hear this" and the reasons for his doing so. Made a hell of a lot of sense to me when I heard it..
I actually expected to see something happen at Southern Region regarding the conversion (scuttlebutt being what it was).. Turned out it happened at War...

Good to hear.

I only spent one afternoon hanging with D -- a couple of years ago when I was in Atlantia and he came down with Tanaka to play -- and he came across as a very cool guy.

He's a good fellow, I met him at one of his first events.

To the best of my knowledge he is willing to discuss this in person with anyone, but not everyone on a bulletin board.

My boss is still around. Busy due to his school schedule, but I talk with him on a regular basis. I can assure you Darius will be around for many years to come.

If he wishes to explain his decision I'm sure he will.

This happened at this past Pennsic.

the Great Serpent Duke isn't going anywhere, as Euric pointed out.
He's been focusing on college but overall is very positive about his involvement within the SCA.
He felt it needed to be done and since taking the Baldric has continued to be everything he was in the past and then some.
As one of his squires and a close friend, I will say that I understand his position 100% and I support(ed) his decision as I am sure most will if he should choose to air it publicly.
