How do you die defensively with a 2handed weapon?
The subjects says it all... But I always wonder about the most secure way to cover myself when I die in melee... (As the Katana-Kamikaze-Squad of the unit I always die...)

As one of the pike pushers in my household, i feel your pain, lol. the thing to do is to pull all your limbs as close to you body as possible and hope for a dead out call real soon.

Rev! You da man!
Great idea.
Personally, I also ALWAYS make sure I get my helm on the ground, because I invariable get someone stepping on my head...or falling on me and LANDING on my head. If the helm is on the ground, it hurts thier ass a lot more than your neck, and frankly if it's MY ass or YOUR neck, I'll take the bruise for you.

hehe there will come the day in some HUGE battle somewhere, that you will be thankful for that fighter with the big shield who died next to you, and used his shield to keep the 300lb shieldman that was standing over the two of you from stepping on your arm.

Being one of the 300lb+ guys I have often had extreme sympathy for the spears, polearms, etc. on the ground. Though in a recent battle at Diamond Wars, I was fighting spear died and went down in the press. Then one of my friends(small fellow at only 220lb) died, he was also fighting spear. He snuggled up against me. I asked him why after the battle. He said 2 reasons:
1. I was more obvious being larger and more likely to be avoided (stepped around and not on) and 2. That there was more of me to step on and it decreased his odds of getting stepped on.
Gotta love your friends, eh?

If I cant hide under someones shield I lie down on my side and pull up my knees. I then place my "bottom" gauntleted fist under my helm to save my neck in case someone steps on my head. I hold my greatsword in my upper fist, resting it on my body going across from head to feet.
Don't know if that made any sense to you, wish I could illustrate it somehow..

...How do you die defensively with a 2-handed weapon?...
Well, it helps to be tall and very skinny...
However, curling up into fetal position works for me. Also, I know of fighters, myself included, who will just yell loudly "I'm dead! I'm dead!" and scoot off with sword held high in a surrender sort of way. I would only do that if it looks too dangerous to lay down and die and I actually have room to scoot out.

It is kind of rotten but how about dying so your weapon is sticking up in the direction of traffic to discourage people from running over you or have it in such a matter that it is a tripping hazard so that fall befor they get to you.
Just some what ifs I don't like the tripping Idea much but the pokey speed bump.

I encourage all our fighters to die "actively". Don't bury your face in the ground, but keep your face up and look around. If you see someone about to step on you, MOVE. You don't have to go far, just scooch from under the approaching foot. If you see someone backing towards your carcass, lightly touch them with your weapon (careful not to trip), and let them know you're there (with your voice - Dead behind you!). Actively block with your weapon, even if dead (make sure it's obvious that you're dead - lie on you back or side)
I also try to emphasize tucking your extremities, but not crossing them - you don't want to create a fulcrum out of your lower limb that can break the upper one if 300 pounds of meat suddenly drops on you. A single limb on the ground can take quite a bit of crushing force and remain only bruised, but a bone on a fulcrum will snap.
And as mentioned, unless you're just the heroic dead type, roll out if the melee moves away from you and head to the side. Leave the speed bump duty to those with shields...

Servus!
After having the Largest Swede in the World sit on me once, I made the conscious decision to never wait for the "dead off" call unless I die between the shield walls. Out in the open - I die mightily, look around, and when the action has moved elsewhere I get up with my weapon WAY over my head and walk to the sidelines. Anyone gets within 10 meters and I scream "I'M DEAD" until they go away.
I know that a lot of folks will disagree with me on this one, but my general health is more important to me than waiting until the marshal tells me I can get up. We've all seen to poor bastard who gets crushed long after he was dead and evryone prays that it never happens to them.

Thank you everyone for your advices and opinions...
I'm only 155pnds and have only a katana to hide behind once on the ground... And I'm a little worried to be stepped on or simply crushed by a 300pnds fellow when I'm dropping dead in larger melee...
Jean Casqueur -> That's the way my squire trained me, so I perfectly see the position.
Ulsted -> I like the concept of dying "actively"... I'll try to pay attention on my surroundings... I'm in a secure position but I've done so many years of live-action roleplaying that i'm really playing dead, eyes closed, etc... That's probably the most reason why I feel a little insecure... I'm acting to much and not enough paying attention to what's going on around me... You really open my eyes on it!
Thanks everyone!

Heilsa!
I generally "die realistically and then see if there's any possible way to crawl to safety without being a tripping hazard, ie, it depends on the press. Not everyone who was a causalty in the middle ages died, ya know!

I always try to do the following: get on the ground, on one side, preferably my right. (Reverse these if on your left side...)
Tuck my right gaunt under my helm for a little support, and shrug my right shoulder up as well.
Cover my face/ neck with my left gaunt/ forearm (with my spear in my hand, if it's anywhere in the vicinity at that point...)
If I can't get my spear in line with my body and helping to cover my face, I just drop it, so that there's a smaller chance that people will trip on it.
Keep my left elbow cop (which is a gi-mongous gothic thing) off of my ribs by kicking it forward off my body.
Keep my knees on top of one another, but keep my ankles separated. Keep my head down... I live in Atlantia, and I wouldn't even think of poking my head around and trying to watch what's happening.
It's kept me safe so far....

from what ive been told(was told this at war practice today) if you have a polearm or GS and you die curl up into a fetal position dont cross your ankles and make sure you have a good chunk of the poleweapon covering your neck(haft perpendicular to your gorget) and try to find a dead shieldman to curl up next to.
thankfully the last time a 300 pounder fell on me i had a shield
