Here's a guige strap from an effigy:
Image

The far right fragment goes over the right shoulder, the broken bit on the bottom left goes under the right arm. You can see the effigy from the front here.

I have used guige straps on a few shields. Then I started using hand baskets (hockey face cages) on my shields and stopped using the guige. I found the combination of the two did not work well. The hand basket was grinding into my back or shoulder, the real reason that hand baskets were not used in period. I find using the guige in combat (holding the handle of the shield too) allowed me to rest by just pushing forward and using different muscles to hold up the shield. Maybe time to give up the hand baskets and go back to the guige.

Hard to find a picture of a shield from our (Bryce and my) time period without a guige. For mounted combat it should hang the shield pretty much where it would be supported by an arm so you could hold a lance with your right hand, the reigns with your left and still have you shield in position, ready to grasp if needed.

I use trigger snaps on mine, and attached a set of home made D rings with leather tabs. Attached at upper right corner and diagonally to the bottom left, and just played with length and position till it hung in the right place. I'd fight spear like that if it were legal and not just historic. 8)

Well, that is till I used my guige strap to make Val's scabbard. :)

Bryce...I have d-rings and trigger snaps...we could knock one out in an afternoon. Whenever.

elbow side is held with one of the top bolts that hold the forearm strap, the other end loops over the hand grip, allows me to have it at the bottom when not being used and at the top when carrying with it or using it while fighting.
