Calling all Viking types.

Because I know NEXT TO NOTHING about Migration-era Scandinavian culture I want somebody to do some work for me so I can get on with a very cool project.
Come up with some mottos that a Viking type would really like. You know, stuff like;
"May Tyr guide this blade"
"Kill the slaves of the White Christ."
and other stuff like that. Do it in English- I already have two guys who will translate these into Runic characters.
Thanks in advance-
V

Find a copy of the Havamal. Lots of good motto-worthy stuff in Odin's own words.

No time.
Oh, and Eirik- this dagger of yours is a serious pain. The handle is so heavy it's gonna fall out of any scabbard that isn't 100% vertical.

Ok, The Migration Era. Sometimes called "The Younger Iron Age" by some archaeologists (mostly Norwegian, if memory serves) or, "Late Roman Iron Age" by others, but the Germans (and others), the period is usually called the "Volkwandringzeit"--literally "The Folk Wandering Time."
Runes, of course, existed during this time (4th, 5th, and some of the 6th centuries), but studying them goes way beyond R.I.Page's book about Runes. You need something way more advanced, and for those reasons I would start with Rune Stones--there are a few websites for this. I will try to find some.
Also, be careful about the Gods you choose. "Viking" gods have been washed through Christian minds--Migration Era Gods may or may not have had the same name--"Donner" in the Migration Era becomes "Tor" in the Viking. Wotan becomes Odin, etc. Brian Branstrom "Gods of the North" is a pretty good introduction to all this.

"The coward believes he will live forever if he holds back in battle, but in old age will not know peace though spears have spared his limbs"
"Cattle die, kinsmen die, but I know one thing that does not die: the glory of the great dead."
both from the Havamal
"Hail and Kill" -Manowar
"Mildest of speech, first in battle, most eager for glory" -loose paraphrase translation (from memory) of the last lines of Beowulf.
"The coward shall not enter the gates of Valhalla" -me
"Weep for Baldur, Rage for Odin" -me

"Sing, goddess, the terrible wrath of Eirik!"
Don't use that one.

"Eat at Bjarki's House of Lutefisk!"
I've had this on my shield before. Always good for a laugh.

How about "Oh shit the vikings are coming"

"The less our numbers the stronger our resolve"
Loosely translated from "The Battle Of Maldon", post migration period but still pretty cool. Spoken after the lord had been cut down and they where nearing annihilation from the "viking" invaders.

You want them translated into ON and then into runes? Drop me a PM and I can help with this, if you wish
