The link is an extremely good read, but I still want more, I am especially interested in the
Original Intent of the rules.
What was David and Ken trying to simulate when they started the combat system?
A Pas d´Armes? An edurance test for armoured men? A true combat simulation? A skill test with simulated weapons?

“Steve Henderson fought his first combat that day, a long duel with Edwin Bersark which he eventually lost. As he came off the field, Felice looked at his sweaty face and battered body and asked, "Steve, are you all right?" Steve answered, "I’ve never had so much fun in my life." Felice, "I’ll never understand men."â€

mmm.. Nothing so structured and organized, I guarantee. A ruleset for having fun playing at sword fighting is probably about as sophisticated as it got in the beginning
And for a feel of what people *intended* at that stage of things, I might recommend looking for some of the songs of His Grace Frederick of Holland. He was there at the beginning and in his songwriting he says more about how people felt about what they were doing than you're likely to get out of this kind of discourse.
