Sorry I got my spear stuck in your throat that time.

Sadly there was whining on the upper administrative level and some on the line dickery. Feel free to PM me if you want to get into it. It was disappointing as was changing the sceranios and rules. Overall it seemed a little disorganized but that shouldn't be taken in anyway that we didn't have an amazing time.

BSR has become one of my all time favorite events and that is perhaps my favorite site on the East Coast. I'll be back next year for sure!

And of course, there is the yearly pilgrimage to the Holy Biscuitworld. (It's in a medieval buiding you know...)

I see you are still using the 'block my head with my 12g Atlantium helm Shield Position' I taught you!

To be fair I was resting so as not to throw up on Rusty. Those bridges were fun but tough to do with a spear!!

Yes Sir knight I was able to learn much of your foo, if you look on my face you can tell what I am thinking... darn I wish I had a spear to lean on... one day I will be as wise as the old lion :)

Actually you pulled that shot beautifully! JUST hard enough that I knew I was dead.

It was when the shaft got pulled across and the troops who ran by clotheslined me with it... THAT I could have done without. :D

i was miserable only getting to watch the fighting. it looked like a lot of fun even if some of the girly folks were scared off by the threat of some rain. :P

temps were great for fighting (although i like it better when its about 40 degrees cooler) and it seemed like everyone was having a good time. i was disappointed in how many times i saw guys bitching and whining about shots with so many of them raising their voices at the other guy. i never saw this with guys i knew so i didnt know if there was a back story or not. it was disappointing to say the least. i just dont get that kind of behavior.

oh, and the whole "mere contact to the face should be taken as a legit face thrust" thing was less than exciting. i didint know there was more than one kingdom that was doing that. i would strongly suggest that those that want touch face thrusts just ban face thrusting altogether as it does nothing to enhance our sport.

the rain was light but held on for a fair while. it seemed like it decided to come down while court(s) were being held which was cool since those were indoors from what i could see. i heard great stories of inviting parties being held at just about every building on site. us old folk were already in bed by then so i missed out. i hate that i will be 20 hours from the event next year as ive really enjoyed the two ive attended and suggest folks try it out.

it really is a great site too, nice clean cabins with showers and a/c. the site is a big loop and the socializing is much like a big block party. good times.

by the way, esa and i are heading down this thursday to pick some place to live so that we will be able to unpack next weekend when we arrive. i thought it might be good to have an address for all our stuff! we do have a place in royal palm beach that we are both pretty excited to see though.

I had a great time in all of the battles (except the banner battle). We loved seeing everyone who came out and fought. We wanted two more battles (at least), so we'll have to see what we can do to fix that next time. Maybe run another quick field battle or something on the other side of the field?

I found out apparently, when I put my bow down and pick up my sword and shield, I think I'm supposed to be in the front ranks. Now, it worked for me, I'm not so certain my guards appreciated it. <grin>

It's going to sound weird, but going up front in the bridge, holding my ground for a while, but losing it when the two guys to my right just pushed off the bridge (into me) was one of my most entertaining moments. I went airbourne and totally cleared the haybale on the side of bridge, landed on my back. Looked up to see some of my guard with this look of "fail" on their faces. When I got back up, resurrected and went right back up to the same spot, they looked much happier. :) I was much happier the third time up (after flying thru the air, again, LOL) when not only did I hold my ground, but I helped capture more ground, right before the marshals checked for possession.

My guard did a great job.. Gareth and the SaberMaul guys rock.. as does Angus the Red. Angus stayed with me during most of the field battles and kept me alive, which is no easy task, since I do not believe in staying still.

Our army did a great job. We have things that we are working on and we continue to improve. Our fighters showed up to support their kingdom and showed how big their hearts are.. and kept fighting the good fight.

It was good having Atlantia fight with us. :) Our neighbors, the Mid-Realm.. gave us a good fight and kept coming back, pushing us hard all day. I've heard other people mention complaining and such. I guess I was lucky since I didn't hear it. Instead, I saw a couple of issues that were quickly worked out.. and most of the fighters looked like they were having a great time.

I did hear that some of the fighters from the Middle didn't love our combat archers and were trying to figure out how to kill them (us). Our archers are just another part of our army. They, like the rest of our army worked together and never gave up. That makes a huge difference. It's always good to know you are appreciated by the guys on the other side <grin>

Great event, awesome fighting (on both sides). We look forward to more fighting at Our upcoming War Practice.

I have to say, daytripping from Buffalo, NY to Ripley, WV for event has to rank in the top 10 really stupid ideas I've had - when I got home Sunday morning at 2 am I'd been up 33 hours - but it was SO worth it!

The fighting was intense but I didn't see a ton of issues, just the usual "first big melee of the year" recognition stuff and a couple of mob on one instead of four on one. Was great fun to spend the entire day fighting polearm even though I realized I need to replace my pole because it's a little to whippy and a lot of people were ignoring my shots - not because they were doing anything wrong I just think I was loosing a lot of power because of my weapon.

On the 2nd bridge battle His Grace Logan referred to me as a one man wrecking crew after I assisted Nugg in ejecting 6 Midrealm guys off the bridge then killed a few more and knocked another guy off, who then managed to hit me in the head as he fell which was BEAUTIFUL. Nicest thing I was told all day  !

I've come to expect confusion in battle scenarios so I guess none of that bothers me, it would have been nice to have things a little more clearly explained because I'm sure it would have changed the battle plans but I have to say given that both armies understood the rules the same way and fought well under the expected scenario the fact that the marshals had a different opinion didn't really matter!

The pick ups at the end of the day were a lot of fun and I picked up a couple pointers, and a couple interesting new bruises including a shot to the nerve cluster in my bicep just above my elbow that caused me to loose feeling in my thumb for a little while!

Good times, next year I will NOT day trip but will spend the whole weekend like we normally do.

Thank you everyone for sharing a Glorious day on the field.

My original game plan was to leave Chicago around 0700 and caravan with 3-4 others from Clovenshield west. To bad that things fell through for everyone else so i was delayed till 1500 :x 8 hours of driving solo for 1 day of fighting somehow was worth it to see the rest of my household and attempt to shake of the rust of not swinging a stick since oct. I was not happy with having no wind out on the field and my timing was off but damn i still had a lot of fun.

Hope to see a lot of you at AE war practice.

Was a good weekend, other than screwing my shoulder up Friday night during the Bear Pit, but didnt let that stop me from fighting for the rest of the weekend. :p

As far as whining, honestly, i rarely ran into it, and if I did, it was the normal stuff, that always pops up from time to time, but nothing major, barely heard it.

Granted calling the Doc this week. Shoulder has been hurting for 3 years, but could still do everything, was just always tight. Now it actually hurts, when I go past certain points, like holding a sword at midlevel. :)

Nope, not at all. That was what SCA melee should be - contested, close (Hey, from my perspective, none of the fights were really blow-outs) and above all FUN.

It was a fun weekend and the weather was great on Saturday for fighting. This was my 8th BSR in the last 10 years and I usually assist a lot with Marshalling on the MK side including running some authorizations this year, but really wanted to focus on fighting--its the first time since Pennsic 38 that my knight, myself and squire brother were all on the field at the same time.
As far as callibration, I never question anyone by the way they calibrate. Given its the first big melee after GW's for most fighters adrenaline is gonna run high on both sides.
When i do pick ups at Pennsic the thrust calibrations vary. My impression is that it is suppose to be touch, other request for "positive force" and some people tell me "thrust like you mean it".
The fighting got pretty intense. I have a nice hematoma on my lower neck from a guy who was wailing a great axe around a 270 arc (bruise thru Kydex BP and 16 guage stainless gorget). I hit the guy twice in the head before and after his initial blow and another fighter was wailing on the dudes body--I chalk it up to adrenaline.
I kept lookin for ebonwulfe armory and did not see you in the vendor area. I wanna check out those new spears!

The only thing I ever said in regard to Aethelmearc's army is that their guys NEVER SEEM TO SHOW UP.

I don't get it. How many knights do they have? When I look up all I see are corn-fed Atlantian monster-guys.

Is their fighting population really small right now?

Numbers for the event in general were down because of the economy and the threat of rain (which totally missed the fighting portion of the event.)

Last year it was like 90 Mid and 90 AE and 80 Atlantians, so they split us.

This year it was 90 Mid, and 95 AE and Atlantians.

Aethelmarc fought smartly, and hung in till the very end. Sometimes they have faded away as the day has gone on but that wasn't the case.

The wierd thing was seeing how small some of the units were. Stalgist, Darkmoon, and Darkyard, at most looked like they about 10 guys each.

I know we had more from my barony than ever before and I was pretty proud of that.

I think that they must have meant Dark Moon, since I'm the only member of Darkyard or Legio that was there (although His Royal Majesty Dag is an honorary member and he does not wear a tree on His Royal fighting gear).

Sir Vitus,

My understanding is that AEthelmearc collectively has about 150 active fighters, and we fielded approximately 75 for Blackstone so about half of our army.

I know in our area we have seen a recent surge at practices, we've added five new guys in the last six months so our regular weekly practice went from 4 - 8 to a pretty solid 15 since we have people traveling to hit our practice now.

I could be way off base but from my experience I don't think our army has ever topped 200.

Have to say, I was pretty damn proud of my kingdom this weekend and the fact that almost everyone stayed on the field until the end.

Thanks for the motivation, Vitus. :) that'll help.

We had 18 Knights make the trip, 3 of which did not armor up for perfectly valid reasons. 2 other knights were waylaid by vehicular or job issues. I was proud of our guys.. some of whom daytripped from quite a distance.

The day was fun, the fighting was hard, contested and chivalrous.

I love Blackstone Raids.. War Practice Cometh!
