Blackstone Raid 2010 ...

Righty then ... the Dragon King knows there is something most worth while to the far east and as much as she loves our cousin's beyond the flatlands, she knows those very mountains beyond hold the key to a well armed army and takes tastes with her tongue to the black stones that lay just out of reach ...

<snip>I'll be heading out this Thursday with a hotel room waiting for me to meet my cousins for a great weekend of fun and adventure in WV. Trust me .. this backed up on gulf is the best dang time I can think of! I might only have only one arm to fight with (trust me it's a long story but I'm getting better at recognizing when I'm busted) but of all the folks I'd love to spar with with or without a barrier, this is it!

Who else is headed out to AE for fun and adventure?

Me and a pack of goons will be headed down.

Excellent! I have changed my gear though. I'm no longer in my 14th C. harness (aside from Pas, Deed, or Combats) but have moved over to my 'practice' harness.

Alas it seems I have a rotar cuff tear on my leftie that I've got to gimp on (i.e. I can no longer pick up my shield arm or even a full cup of hot coffee with my left arm) , but anyone who wants to play some single blade dances I'm up for it!

**edited to remove annoying pics ... and to note that I tried using spear at Blackstone and yup ... shoulder is wonked. Blahhh**

Iain,

Sorry to hear about the cuff injury, but glad you are resting it.

I will not be making BR, but plan on being at Aeth War Practice. It would be great to actually have a chance to talk. :-)

I will not be going, as this is the week before Coronation (and smack dab in the middle of Derby Fest!). But Blackstone is a great event, with people from all over in a beautiful location. I highly recommend it.

A couple of us are day tripping unless the weather is looking really terrible. I'll be leaving Buffalo about 2 am to meet up with my peeps in PA and we should be on site around 10 - 10:30. Gonna stay until the fighting is done and then drive back to PA....

I know what you look like, hopefully we'll be able to get some stick time in!

It'll be odd not having Brighid with me as navigator. Though I should be able to get there in less time now since I shouldn't get lost nor need to dodge so many possums. But regardless. I will be there. Might even be able to suit up.
At the least I will be trying to lure some of the gentry into a friendly game of chance or twelve.

The Armies Skirmish

The opposing forces of Midrealm and Aethelmearc finally meet and begin to test each other’s weaknesses.

3 Field Battles, no resurections, 3 minute break between battles. Combat Archery allowed in 1st & 3rd battles. The Loser of the preceeding battle gets a 10 second "start" advantage- that being they can start moving and 10 seconds later the other side is allowed to move.

The Denial at the Fording

The Midrealm Army pushes deeper into Aethelmearc Territory, seeking to cross the river and enter the foothills of the Black Stone Mountains.

3 Bridge Battles, 7 minute resurection battles with NO combat archery. 3 Random time checks for control of the middle of the bridge. The loser gets a 5 second Lead for the next battle.

The Battle for the Foothills

3 more Fields Battles. Rules the same for the first three field battles. Combat archery in the 1st and 3rd battles.

The Battle for the Blackstone Hold

3 Dynamic Gate battles, 10-15 minute resurrection battles.

1 Main Gate & 2 smaller side gates. Combat archery is allowed in the back field only, not at or across the gates. The Gates may be overurn and sacked by taking down the banners behind those gates. Conditions for win are the control of the majority of the Gates or the capture of the associated enemy Gate banners. Again, winner gets a 5 second “delayâ€

I simply cannot go and not fight, and right now I cannot fight. I can barely pull my goddamn gauntlets on. I can't watch crowds of armoured men smash together and not get in there and try as hard as I can.

I'm gonna beat this.

Maureen is in her six month of pregnancy and looks like she swallowed Shaq's bowling ball. I ain't moving anywhere. Fighter practice in the FLF suit is even iffy.

Just an FYI the current forecast calls for 60% chance of thunderstorms on Saturday.

Currently we are a game day decision, I have to drive 2 hours at 2 am to meet up with my crew to then drive the 5 hours to get on site, fight all day and drive back... I'm all for it but a 10 to 11 hour round trip for an afternoon in armor is great, that drive to be chased off the field by lightning would suck all kinds of bad things.

If anyone on site could send a weather update Friday night that would be awesome. Wish I hadn't bought tickets to take my wife out to see Jersey Boys Friday night but I bought them for Xmas before the dates were published for BSR. Otherwise we'd be there Friday and the worst thing that would happen is I'd spend the weekend drinking!

HOPE to see everyone on the field Saturday!

And as his Grace said, this is an AWESOME event and if you get a chance to go make the trip!

No way I miss this. I should be jugging Friday Night and will help with Inspections Sat. morning. Chance of rain is high, but fun will be had!

Ugh, Nissan, if you have that, I feel sorry for ya. Have had them 3 times like 10 years ago, before I started drinking lots of water everyday. I was basically curled up in a ball crying like a baby for 3 days straight. I would be ok for 45 min, then curled in a ball for 45 min, for 3 days all 3 times. I've had women tell me, who had both kids and kidney stones, that they would prefer the children. Granted no idea if they were just sympathizing with me or not, but I could believe it after that.

I had a great time as well, the fighting was alot of fun and the rain held off till after all the fighting.

Some highs for me:
All of the field battles- intensely contested and I just love field battles
The 7 minutes bridge battles- they were the most intense bridge battles I have ever fought in, a lot of energy.
Hanging out with good friends and making a few new ones.
The reservationist this year was just so nice and helpful- thank you Baroness Gwyneth Olafsdottir, you really started off my event in a very positive foot.

Some lows-
Changing the rules of each of the battles… several times
The ending… I would have really like to know that the fighting was done for the day and we were not going to do the last battle… before I waited through a court.
The limited front battle (the last one) was just very unorganized.
The threat of rain caused a lot of folks not to show up

Here is a pic of my knight looking ever so threatening during one of the bridge battles…

I have to agree it was a mosh pit with weapons at a few point; a ton of fun.

There seemed to be a great deal more whining this year, which was realy disapointing. I ended up throwing my back out realy bad in the second bridge battle but finished the day out anyway, and salvaged a good time out of the event. I love that I was abele to fight with my pole arm all day, even through the pain it was a ton of fun and I look forward to next year.

Great time. I was away from the field far too long.

I didn't notice a ton of whining (no more than usual), given for a lot of folks it is the first "big" melee of the year.

All the battles were fun, if a bit disorganized. Trotted out some new kit items and all worked great! Should have yelled bacon when I charged into Clovenshield. :D

Ran into Atlantia on the field... again, and again, and again. I felt loved.... like a well used pell.

Had a lot of my household there. My squire Einar is doing a TERRIFIC job as Baron in his area, and my squire Ulrich fought after a 2 or 3 year span away from the SCA. MAN it was fun to fight with him.

Some WONDERFUL lady in camp made colconnon from scratch for dinner! WOO HOO!!!

Good to see you Brother Amos! I still think that cross/pole arm is on of the coolest weapons ever!

I smacked one of your guys with my cudgel, and thought about yelling bacon and pointing in a random direction JUST as the rest of them crushed me.... :D

Almost made it to Random, too.....

Touche!

I see you are still using the 'block my head with my 12g Atlantium helm Shield Position' I taught you!

To be fair I was resting so as not to throw up on Rusty. Those bridges were fun but tough to do with a spear!!
