"Football helmets" may preserve the experience of an open-face helmet for the combattant wearing one, but not for his opponent who has to look at the $#%^&* ugly thing. Nor would it preserve the medieval experience for all the gallery of spectators watching the fight.

We have an obligation to our opponents and to our gallery to provide them with a medieval experience. Bargrills don't cut it.

If safety weren't an issue, I'd be all for anyone who wished to remove his visor and fight with no face protection at all; that would be accurate.

SCA bargrills are not accurate. They don't look like medieval bargrills, and they weren't as common in period as they are in the SCA. I'd love to see a King Renee tourney with REAL bargrills. That would be a totally appropriate and accurate venue for bargrills.

And, I refute your assertion that I am mistaken in my belief that I require full visors to re-create what a medieval knight felt. I know what I need to get my medieval jollies, thank you. Image

Here are King Renee's tournament rules:
http://www.princeton.edu/~ezb/rene/renehome.html
It's the best documented set of tournament rules I've seen, and it addresses a lot of the things people have been voicing concern about. Let's not reinvent the wheel, when the real goal of a truly historic event is to rediscover it, and have fun in the process.

Tim- I'm happy to do what I can to make your armour more authentic. I hold an open armour shop on Monday nights with that as one of the major purposes. I'll talk to you Wednesday about it.

Kings aren't as common in period either Image At least population wise, except among the Irish. Image

By the way, not only does Trevor look pretty when he is fighting, he has a very nice camp as well. I'm not sure if the propane torches he uses for torchlight tournies are period, but they do allow for some very fun torchlight Pas's!
