Don't know about plans, but look at some of the pennsic pages on the web. Some of them have lot of pics of gates for ideas.

Hmm.

I've seen ONE castle front that looked decent. It was made to look like a Roman fort. It used painted foam for rocks and bark splits from a lumber mill to make the fortification. The tower was two stories high, with imposing looking gates made out of sheet plywood with little surface cuts to represent boards. The whole thing was put up by a guy who did set design. Very impressive!

That being said, the rest of the castle fronts I've seen were complete crap.

If you are going to a lot of time to construct and transport this, I suggest that you undertake it with the idea of making something that looks like whatever it is supposed to be.

I've done a walled Landskencht encampment, complete with cannons, a pillory, and gun-ports by the gate. IT looked great when it was done, but it was a lot of work.

I've also looked at a miniature castle, based on those that were built for the "Assault on the Castle of Love". It consisted of a tower with two sections. The first was 8' by 8' by 8'. This used common lumber framing on the inside, with stone-patterned paneling on the outside. There was to be a floor over the bottom section, with a 4'high section mounted above. Ideally, it would be made strong enough to support a couple of men in armor (thus the studding).

One important factor for portable structures, especially for those that are supporting people, is to level the emplacement.

enough blathering: I hope this helps!
