The passage of arms put on by the Company of St Michael at Riding of the Marches this past weekend was great. It gave good opportunity for both tenants (those who hold the field) and venants (those who come to challenge) to display prowess.
Most of the bouts were fought to 3 counted blows. You also lost if you dropped your weapon, were driven from the list, fell down, or received a thrust to an open faced helm, inside of the elbow or armpit. You could also choose to yield if someone struck a particularly skillful blow.
The highlight of the day for me was fighting Master Galleron and then Baron Manfred under terms above, but without counting the blows. Combat was much closer to the descriptions of period combat, with powerful blows being struck in order to set up thrust and disarm maneuvers.
