I.33 Images

Post by john »

Are there any Images from I.33 available on line that are better (larger/higher resolution/full color) than the images available from AEMMA and ARMA?

There are some. There's an article on the manuscript in one of the Royal Armouries yearbooks. I'm thinking it's around 1997, but double check the contents before you buy it. The article only has a few more images that aren't on the web, but there are some good color plates, and the text is very helpful.
Dr. Singman/Forgeng of the Higgins Armoury is planning on publishing a monograph of the entire manuscript some time soon. This means the Royal Armouries won't print any copies of the manuscript for anyone else. Unfortunately "soon" in the publishing world is like "soon" in the geology world.

Dr Forgeng is currently polishing the translation, and will publish it when he is satisfied with the translation. You don't rush translations, as a rushed one quickly becomes the laughingstock of the community as the errors are realized.

Do you want it good? Or do you want it now? Image Can't have both I'm afraid.

He thinks "Soon" to publish. I see him regularly, and if I hear anything definite I will probably post it.

I have a copy of I.33 when I went to Leeds. I can try to scan them in and post them here.

John,
http://www.armouries.org.uk/publications/books/year.html
The one you want is volume 2 for 1997.
Winterfel- I'd LOVE to see what images you have. Are the color? Are the images high quality?

And remember you asked for it.
The Images that I have are a larger clearer version than what is on the ARMA site. They are black and white because they were photocopied at the Leeds Library. So the lines that you see are creases and such from the book. I wish they were in color. Here is the link:

PS pages 31 right and left are missing, it seems the littel buggers did not scan well, so I will repost them this evening. (just found out a few minutes ago while at work)
Anyways enjoy!

Indeed, thank you. Putting all that up was obviously no trivial task. The images are certainly more helpful than what what was available before.
I'd hoped the text would be a bit more legible. Are the original pages very large, or was the text written with a needle fine quill?

Unfortunately when I was at Leeds I was not able to see the original manuscript, but it looks like a fine quill was used. The years have also not been kind to the original, hence the creases and damgaged pages, even when I scanned them and they were at 1100 x 2200 the lettering is still barely readible.
Which is a shame since I hope someone can one day translate it.
