Heat Rash -yes it's combat related!
Heat Rash -yes it's combat related!
Hi everyone.
Is there anything I can put on my face to stop severe heat rash. I am highly alergic to heat (seriously) and I just can't take coming back from hot events with a blistered face every other week -my eyes are almost swullen shut thanks to Border Raids.
Thanks for any help you can give -my face appriciates it.

first: dont shave. seriously. shaving before extreme heat will break almost anyone out.
Second, get some of those "daily facial cloths" (walmart has a genric version) and periodically wipe yourself clean.
in all actuallity, you probly arent allergic to heat, just sensitive to something in your sweat.

While not very period, I would suggest making a few arming caps out of cotton terrycloth.
If you have the room in your helm (or can create the room by adjusting your padding) you could even go with a sandwich of terrycloth-cotton batting-terrycloth.
Then just change arming caps between battles when they are sweat saturated.

Wow! I actually shaved just before I left for the event and this was the worse case of heat rash I've had from fighting. The alergic to sweat is more accurate since I didn't have any problems when I lived in Arizona and the surrounding area. Thanks for the great advice.
Chadwick: My plan was to make several caps for the day. Several caps should help keep the nasty sweat off me and that will help if I'm highly alergic to something in my sweat like the good Rev suggested. Thanks for the terrycloth idea, I'll try it out.
Anyone else have some good advice? I need all the help I can get since I'm now moving to Meridies in 12 days.

Stay hydrated
Ditch as much padding as possible in the summer, espically poly batting.
Get a cooler and keep cold rags in it to put on your face and head between fights.
saty out of the sun as much as ya can, which is hard because where ever there is no shade that is where we will fight and possibly have court

Remember: Natural fabrics (ex. cotton) = good, polyester = bad.
Natural fabrics will "wick" the sweat away from your body and into the fabric where it can evaporate. Polyester based fabrics will just hold in the sweat and make you hotter and more uncomfortable.

If you have foam in your helm replace it with a cloth liner, and use cotton, or linen for the liner.
Also Wal-Mart has this item that is a cloth strip with these crystals that retain water. Forgot what they are called though. Found them in the sport/hunting-fishing area for a dollar. I keep one tied to my neck under my collar and it helps keep me cooled down being on an artery in the neck.

I used to work in a factory here in Texas where it would get up to 120 during teh heat of the day. Management passed these out to everyone. They work pretty good, even after they're not cold anymore...still cooler than the heat!

Rev. George: You've got to be careful about those face wipes though. My wife passed out a bunch on a break at Avalon's Tokyo demo. The chorus of high-pitched screams that followed would have been quite amusing had I not been part of the soprano section myself. The Japanese sometimes add a sort of menthol to theirs. It's about as refreshing as having a layer of skin taken off with sulfuric acid.

I will add my own word of caution to the facial wipes...I broke out in a horrible rash from them at the last event I went to, itched like crazy for a week and a half! Only the areas I had used the wipe on had the rash, so I'm sure it was an allergic reaction to them.

Watch what you eat 24 hours beforehand, it might be adding to your sweat irritation. Go bland, low acid, low salt.
Drink water. Drink water. Tattoo this on something you see every day. Drink WATER. Not Gatorade, not pop, not beer, not juice. WATER.
Wear a waterproof, sensitive skin formula (I.E., for babies) sunscreen, just a little. After fighting, wash your face in water only. Don't towel, no soap, just splash.
