Anyone using Windrose's spun AL round shield in SCA combat?

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Anyone using Windrose's spun AL round shield in SCA combat?

Post by Gest »

How does Windrose Armoury's spun aluminium round shield hold up in SCA combat? The website doesn't mention the alloy.

Thanks in advance...

If he's selling it for SCA combat it's plenty tough.
He knows what he's doing.

I got one as a gift a while back, and gave it to a newbie. I'm stupid about giving things to newbies.

It was a great shield, and nigh indestructible, but the handle was an issue for me. It just didn't feel right. I am not sure if the handle was a windrose thing, or fitted by my buddy.

Very light and fast, but the relatively heavy gauge (which is the indestructible part of the equation) negates part of that. Personally, if it's significantly lighter and faster that the same shield in wood (flat) I wont beef too much.

It's a compromise, and one that actually speaks really well of windrose. They could make it a little thinner and lighter, and have them fail every couple of years or so. This would mean that the buyers would come back for another one pretty regularly. They don't do that. They just build quality shields.

Good shields, but not for everybody.

I got one from a guy here on AA last month, and I am very impressed with it. I do plan to cut a boss into it, as soon as I can get one. I cannot wait to fight it. I would buy one, and most things from Windrose, with confidence.

It's made in Atenveldt. The guys who probably tested them drop bombs. :P

I believe Agnarr has been fighting with one for a while now.

I have one still in the works ( like many things).

It appears the the trim-lok edging works well with it and appears to be tough. My goal is to have it done in the next couple of weeks, time permitting. I'll do a proper review then.

In the meantime, there's not been one thing I've bought from Windrose that has failed me, and I've never seen a bad review of them, buy with confidence.
Revenge is a matter of style.

yeah they are badass. Mine is kind of a big deal. It has many leather bound books. It's library smells of rich mahogany. My shield doesn't always drink beer, but when it does, it drinks dos equis.

Does it come back to you after you throw it, or do you have to practice to get the angles right?

The shield considered practicing once, but decided it would be an unfair advantage.
