So Ursalmas. Biggest tourney in An-Tir. 4 erics of over 20 fighters per. Each eric is round robin, Top two advance.

Thorin was in the finals.

HG is right around 60.

I wanna be him when I grow up.

That was 8 erics of 20+ fighters. Total list was ~170.

By the way congrats on making top 16! Although I'm not gonna lie...I would rather have knocked you out of the top 16

I felt that age was less of an issue than conditioning. You can probably see from my poor shield work in the latter rounds that I was getting tired.
(My conditioning is poor because I haven't gotten much practice or exercise since my son was born. But, he has been well worth it.)

As to fighting at a high level in your latter years it is really very basic. I started with a good base (one of my early teachers was Duke Paul of Bellatrix). I avoided all techniques that caused harm to myself. My martial arts training has added to my understanding of proper movement. I also have always trained in a consistent manner (regular and intelligent. Drills and Practice, not just pounding on each other). I also have tried to live a healthy lifestyle (exercise, good food, stretching, etc.).

But I think we can all agree it was in the 170s. It was a mighty tournament.

I am not sure how many our field had, seemed like lots and lots though.

Two reasons for my post:
1) On these boards we ofetn hear of the great fighters from other kingdoms: Dukes Logan, Michael of Bedford, Baldar, Jade, Uther etc. But we rarely hear about the best fighters from An-Tir. People like yourself, Sven, Davin etc. It's about time people knew more about our top fighters.

2) I just turned 40 and have rededicated myself to fighting again. I'm 20 years (ish) younger than you. Your ability to constantly stay at the top levels of the game is very inspiring to someone like myself.

It's funny I was watching you fight and HG Owain and I were talking about this. Owain said, "You know, I don't think I've even hit him in a practice let alone a tourney." Pretty impressive.

Btw: That is your son?! Once again inspiring. I actually thought that was your grandchild With my kids being 22, 18 & 13 I honsetly couldn;t imagine starting over again. Tip of the hat to you.

My field started with 23 but 2 dropped out. I know of 2 others that started with 23. It was a long first round to marshal.

23x22=506/2=253. 253 if you average 1 fight a minute is 4:13.

Thorin indeed does rule. His Grace has an excellent reputation in An Tir, and though I have never had the pleasure to meet him I hope that one day I might be blessed to sit in his presence.

'eric' is also an optional word for 'list'..thus, not all 'erics' are 'Erics' if you get my drift!

And, yes, it is a total SCAism - no historical reference whatsoever.

Save to SCA history, that is -- back in the Legendary Era (still within living memory, but time is ticking...), in the West Kingdom I think, the listfield boundaries were demarcated with a fence of stakes and cloth ribbon.

Red cloth ribbon. And it lasted for many tourneys over some few years. They kept seeing red ribbon. Over and over. A major tourney without the stakes and the ribbons just wasn't the same.

And you know the SCA fondness for jokes -- ye greybeards of the East will recall the many spellings of the Barony of Mirkwood -- and just why they were all official. Atenveldters of like dotage may recall Sir Van Gules and the tale of that knighting... yes, beer was involved.

So some wag (was he a notorious herald?) had to point, and say it: "Eric the Red." Giggles followed.
