Ok, from Blackbow's work, I've contacted Zoombang about some maximum coverage shorts. Below is a mockup of the expanded coverage I sent him to proof.

So, far here is what I've got.

Read the email. The parts 'shaded' in red is where the padding will be

Personally I'd like to see padding on the back of the thigh, too.

I'd like to see it wrap around the back just a little bit, right above the knee area. I'm coming up on needing to replace my crash pads (2300's), and if the price and protection are comparable, I may go with this instead.

If they'd do a "turf sleeve" style slip on with a layer of the stuff over the forearm section, that'd be neat, too.

This thing looks like a great idea.

Would be perfect to wear under any armor piece, even on it's own!

I would like back of the thigh since the butt cheek idea didn't garner much interest. And side of the thigh.

The area shrouded in red is where the padding would be, as I understand. So side should be included.

How much padding are we talking about? Would these shorts remove the need for a cuisse?

These look pretty close to an already available pair of padded shorts from McDavid.

More padding than the dark red, slightly less than the pink.

Another vote here for wrapping around the back of the thigh.

Yes, this. The back of the thigh is where the wrap hits, and that is often worse than the side of the thigh, if we are being knit-picky.

I know quite a few fighters in the baronies around here that fight with no thigh protection at all, since it's not required by the rules, so it's all about your personal pain tolerance/protection need.

Then yes they are close. But hopefully not the same.

I know the MacDavids only go up to 2X in size and do not have a cup pocket. The above ones will have a cup pocket and go to 3X. I also think the padding on the above is thicker than the lopro padding of the macdavids.

My street hockey pants have a built in cup.
Until these have a built-in cup, they are sub-par.

I've let zoombang know that EVERYONE wants the padding to wrap around the back of the thigh.

Yeah, the new coverage zones look good to me. I'm ambivalent about the T in the back.

With the way I block I'd need the whole backside to be padded.

...You'd think I'd learn.

Go as far around in either direction as testing indicates you can without interfering with the step of the wearer on the thighs - wraps can go very deep. I'd like to see a system so that the top and bottoms can be pointed together easily - the zoombang stuff is nice but it weighs and protects like heavy leather (but is much more flexible) and that weight must be supported.

I'd look at remounting the pieces on natural fibers - the more I think about it the more I'm partial to linen for its superior heat transfer properties.

I imagine once a pattern is decided on, you will call zoombang and ask for this specific shorts. That is how it is being done with Blackbow's shirt design.

In the other thread about the shirt, if they added some padding on the sleeve for vambraces it would be a perfect combo.

Calgofo: I thought about asking for those but I didn't think it would work on our end simply because everybody has such different armor there. Hardly anybody I know has anything on their bicep, and that pad shouldn't interfere, but adding anything to elbows/forearms might have caused problems. You're not the only one that wants one that way, though, so if you want to email Tom and explain it I'm sure they wouldn't mind doing a one-off.

As much as I like the zoombang stuff, I should say that there are some areas that I wouldn't trust it to be the equivalent of heavy leather - wrists, forearms, collarbones, and ribs. Sometimes the only thing that acts like a large plate is a large plate. Do not trust plate (of any kind) by itself unless you are very familiar with the material and the punishment sustained sca fighting. Hip points and shoulder points should also be given special consideration.

Give careful thought to your armor. The smaller you are the more important this is, generally speaking. The locations mentioned above are well armored on myself by heavy waxed leather supported by either hexpad (extremities) or quilted vest (back and chest), and I am a 215 pound male. I also armor well above sca minimums, because I see fluke circumstances regularly create power multipliers that the heavier armour allows me to walk away from.

Layered materials are your friend.

I'm mostly interested in the shorts as the shop already has the shirts i want...

I mainly want side leg protection, to go with my light hidden legs.

if they configure like the most recent pic I'd be interested when money clears up. They could replace the nothing that I wear for thigh armour now! I'll second adding a cup pocket too BTW.
