Alright, this was my first time.

And damn...it was awesome. Best fighting I've had in a long time. Got me really amped up for Gulf next month. :)

Thanks all, and especially the Midrealm for hosting such a kick-ass event.

Great fighting at the Brannos Invitational ;)

Did we happen to cross in the tourney?

114 fighters, 2300 bouts fought....!

I met him! Dammit I met yet another archiver and actually chatted with 'em (albeit it never seems long enough to just hang out and chat or hit food & beverage afterwards!). I spotted him first (the helm is a dead giveaway but liked the overall look) but he caught me on the 'hey aren't you on the archive ...' conversation opening.
He looked good both in harness and fighting! Alas I can't make it to Gulf this year but if we can't meet up at Pennsic then we've always got Candlemas next year to actually try and spend time chatting! I'd changed my harness over to my mid 14th C. vs. my later more steel one but he still spotted me (see the glory and usefulness of heraldry!)

Alas I wasn't able to get over to Diglach's taking of a new squire but I did get to cross blade v. polearm with the new fella. Great fun fight and we were both grinning at the end of it!

It was a long and glorious day. Every fight I had was hard fought, clean and courteous. Here's my kit that day so we can better seek each other out on the field.

As the tourneycrat I would like to thank everyone who participated throughout the day.
The ladies at the list table kept thing hopping.
Marshals volunteered for a day of about 8 hours of standing.
The members of the Chivalry who volunteered to be massacred and their candy looted by the children of the event.
(usually I do this by myself, glad to share the love this year!)

We had 111 fighters, including about 40 members of the Chivalry, and 5 Kingdoms represented.
The design of the tourney makes you fight all day and hard.
By the end of the day we had approx 2350 fights not including pickups, Crown holding a list, refights and fight-offs due to ties.

I would also like to thank Their Majesties Ullr and Anne for letting me run about an hour late.

We also had an unbelts tourney of prowess prior to the Candlemas pool tourney.
It had 46 fighters and it was a great display of fighting in a single elim tourney with the populace, Chivalry, and Crown watching.
Havard won,
There was a tie fight off for second between Ekkil and Cecil with Cecil winning the fight-off.
Well done all and it was a glorious day.

If you missed the children/Chiv melee, it was a hoot!

My thanks to you Omerad -

As wonderful an event as I remembered, even more so, considering how court went. :D

And new site is great!

I had a great time at my first Candlemas! Well worth the drive down from Michigan.

Curiously, of the 111 fighters, it seems that most I fought are active posters here on the Archive, with three of them having already weighed in here! Great fights from all of them!

If I had known that the belt was shiny and new I would have talked about *that* to distract you while we were fighting!

I hate to admit this, but Candlemas was not a big high for me this year. I believe a couple of things contributed to it; a nasty interaction with someone before the tourney started to just feeling bad all day because of low iron. I enjoyed the pick ups and meetings some fighters I have never met before. There was a Duke… I believe from Meridies that I had the great honor of meeting this year who was just amazing in his complete love of fighting and the SCA. I am terrible with names so I don’t recall his but he is a great guy.

Fighting with Duke Felix was also a high in the event for me; and one of the most enjoyable series of fights I have had in a long time. His facial expressions and mannerisms while he was fighting reminded me so much of Sir Corby it made me smile.

And lastly I need to mention Luttr is just a freaking stud. Every time I meet that guy I walk away thinking WOW!! He is just such an amazing person and to me really embodies the ideals of knighthood.

You actually left with 2 more fights left in your last pool.
I looked everywhere for you to finish because you could advance if you won them.
Someone told me you has left.
I checked outside to try and catch you but apparently you were gone.
The Meridian Dukes were...
Caspar, Aileagheanon, Seth, Thomas,

Having advanced quite far at Candlemas on two occasions I can say without reservation that it is an amazing test of physical endurance, but the mental pressure may be even more amazing. If you are not 100% focused on your intentions you are boned.

Great performances by the following unbelts-

Cecil de Tuerleone
Ekkil Ullrsom
Odo of the abbey of St. Martin
Havard Elrick

Its a great event for the non-fighter too!

I was kinda tied up some with prepping for the TWO surprise raisings in Court of my two good friends; Arnulf Ullrson, now a Master of the Laurel in Norse Clothing and Crafts, and his lady wife, the newly made Baroness of the Court, Arnora Af Dyfflin. Next time I should try harder to identifiy the AA's who attended.

If you're curious, I was the guy at Court retaining for HRM Ullr while trying to inconspicuously film his two good friends (and Arnulf is also his squire) with my super secret hidden-camera-in-a-book (wearing the yellow tunic).

OK, that book is a super cool idea.

And yes, it was a good court! My squire got a Dragon's Tooth, and my Lady was put on her vigil for the Pelican!

I hope to have the video of the Court uploaded to Youtube this week sometime. I have the Story of the Mighty Pebble/Stone, her shocked face and tears, and your Lady Wife being put on Vigil as well. The whole thing is about 45 minutes long. I was fairly pleased with the result. I'll post the link here when done.

All of those warriors were impressive in prowess and who they handled themselves on the field.

And yes. Candlemas is a tremendous test, phyiscally and mentally.

In fact, that test was one of the major reasons I went (After Una's vigil and Aeric's squiring). I wanted to see how "healed" my body really was, and if my mind was still in the game. It was my second time in armor since Pennsic, and I wanted to see not only how I would hold up, but how I felt afterward.

In a word - wonderful. Saw good friends, made new ones, and rediscovered much of the joy of what we do. Looking forward to melee season!

And I didn't break anything... or fall apart!

Just so everyone understands how the tourney is run...
We start off with pools of 7 or 8 fighters who fight everyone in the pool and we advance all but 2.
(this year the list dropped 1 from each pool by mistake so a LOT of newbies got a LOT of fighting)

The next pools are of 7 or 8 and we advance all but the bottom 3.

After that we adjust the pools depending on the time that we have left.
If we have a lot of time we keep at least half from each pool if time is short we keep less until we can manipulate it to a tree of 8 or 16.
From there it is single elim best of 3 fights.

The final bout is best of 3.

This year the victor fought about 30-35 fights, newbies got at least 7 with many getting 14.
Most double elim tourneys, the victor gets 8-12 fights, newbies get 2.

Total fights fought were around 2300ish

Thank you for your kind words...

Yeah, I didn't expect to close on Ivar quite as fast as I did (neither did he...). I "double clutched" on the shot and he didn't. :D

My only wish for the tourney would for it to have started earlier so there could have been some pickups after it was over.

Next year we will start the Tournament of Prowess at 11am and do inspections/auths in the back 2 lists and start the Candlemas tournament at 12 noon.

Yeah, he doesn't do that much... And if you're moving into his range just expect him to be waiting. I speak from experience. ;)

Had a lot of fun being picked apart piece by piece by you, btw. I'm pretty sure that's the first time we've ever fought. I'm looking forward to doing it again soon.

Sir William - your opponent was Duke Ailgheanan, I knwo because he spoke of hte fun he had in the fight on the way home.

My soon-to-be husband Seth was the only other Meridian duke there - and I can tell you he had a blast! This was his first real tourney back since he won Crown last, two and half years ago, after a series of shoulder surgeries.

Caspar is HRH - he will be a Duke when he steps down. Thomas is a newly minted Earl, but I suspect in the next few years people will have a chance to call him Duke.

Thank all our Midrealm hosts, we had a spectacular time!

He SCARES me, I've never had anyone beat me literally in the blink of an eye... no joke, I blinked and his sword was inches from my bargrill!

LOL Great fight none-the-less (for me at least, most likely not much of a challenge for His Grace.

heh heh 8)

He keeps digging through my rack for "Helium-filled rattan" (his words)

I met him at a MidRealm Crown in the evening outside as we both enjoyed our cigars. Great guy.

I believe Duke Palymar was taking a batch of them during the various stages of the tourney, but I don't believe they have been edited and put up on YouTube yet (Dukex3).

Thanks
