does anyone know off hand if its legal to make pole weapons in caid (or sca wide) using a fiberglass pole?
i have acess to a nice spear shaft thats not getting any use and would love to make something useful out of it.
yes i know i can make a spear, which it currently has a only used once windrose spear tip kit on it.
i already have a nice spear though and could use a nice polearm.

If you want to get rid of the extra pole I'd be happy to take it off your hands for you :)
I'd even be willing to pay a small fee.

You could paint it to look like brass and stand it up in the middle of your tent. Just a thought.

Make a second spear for a loaner / practice purposes.

I know the original reason they break crappy, but what about the hvy wood grain poles have any of those broken? I saw the abuse vidieo and they seem fairly sturdy and if they had a head on they so they were not the main point of impact i wonder if they would work. Plus they would be less whippy then thinner rattan polearms.

Just to be clear i mean the wood grain spear shafts that Logan is making the older heavy ones.

i already have a fiberglass spear i use infrequently.
and i dont fight often enough to expect it to break any time in the near future.
and my tent already has a centerpole.
ill most likely just sell it off.
thanks.

Has anyone discussed using the fiberglass poles for swords? I've heard about polypropylene (or something like that?) for swords. While I can't speak for Sir Omarad, I could see something like polypropylene being oked for a pole weapon experiment if someone came up with a good prototype.

Fiberglass works well for several things in heavy combat. Spears, Bows, and Banners.
The latteral forces from smashing or hitting can cause stress raisers to from and if you have ever had a fiberglass bow self distruct you realize how important it is to avoid.

That is a huge and inaccurate extrapolation from my statement.
I said no to using fiberglass as a polearm shaft.
Period.

Now if you have other materials you think might work well then follow the experimental weapons guidelines and go through your KEM.

Too flexible.
I tried one to see.

Exactly.
Anyone with any experience knows that the stuff shatters and cracks when struck laterally.

yeah that makes sense, i guess if i actually gave it a little thought i would have at least figured THAT out.
what about cutting them down for single hand spears?
like 4-5 feet long?
how do the rules differ on shorter thrust only weapons?
can you use the low profile thrusting tips on a single hand spear if its fiberglass?

Actually, I don't remember seeing a minimum length for spears. A spear is a spear.

That's changing to 48" minimum.

rules are the same essentially.
Yes, a mandrake tip can be used on a short fiberglass spear.

Just out of curiosity, why is there a minimum length for spears at all? Is there a belief that somehow shorter lengths, beyond a certain (arbitrary?) point, are more dangerous?

Related, I've got a whole bunch of leftover bits from making spears, and I'd really like to put them to use, and don't see why they couldn't be used as daggers (no striking edge).

for clarity and gamesmanship purposes.
We can discuss fiberglass daggers but they couldn't be used to strike.

That sounds like a reasonable suggestion, thrust only, more like a stiletto/misericorde than a true dagger.
