I can't see the video at work since Utube is blocked at Picatinny Arsenal. ;(

I didnt not find that Avalon threw that hard, they did take hard becuase of all of the armor usually, which I guess means they must have threw hard and I know we were always trying to get them up to Western Kingdom standards. This is with the exception of Lord Noe, Sir Robert Kinslayer and Earl Cadugan. I left in '05 so I am sure things have changed.

Japan was super cool though. I would encourage anyone to head out there if they had the chance. Lord Noe should be Sainted for the work he does out there and keeps doing.

He's got an SCA Dojo!!!??? Where can I get me one of those!!!??? Be so awesome! To go hang out at an SCA Dojo!!!

The videos are worth your time. Noe is very innovative and the "pirate battles" with the ropes and boards was totally cool. IF I ever get to retire, I'm totally stealing that idea for a local fun-fighting group. It looks like a lot of goofy fun.

It's a dream of mine to fund and fight in a WMA dojo. It would be a non-profit operation IMO, but man it would be fun. My skill is meager so I'd invite guest lecturers to come in and teach. There are plenty of spots in Cheyenne where I could set up a dojo.

The plan right now is:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Fencing and/or boffer fighting (Nerf, foam arrows, etc...)
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday: SCA heavy / WMA
Sunday: Closed

PS: I'm an investor in Castle Tintagel and the data I'm getting off of my meager investment is wonderful. Noe is doing the pilot study work for me IMO for a very small fee.

Dojo's are definitely a tough gig... but come to think of it... what isn't!?

Don't forget the "birthday parties" for kids!

Yep, the boffer fighting is mostly for kids. Adults can be hit by the kids, but not hit back. They can block, and hit other adults when boffer fighting.

I'd get things like tables to fight around, ropes like Noe has, etc...

If I was ever well off and had the land I would build a Ludus for SCA training as well as exploring Roman Army tactics and Gladiator Training. I would invite people from all over the world like the groups in Italy and Germany to do training and seminars.

Yeah, the calibration is going up. It's still not as hard as some Kingdoms but I've noticed in the past year that (thanks to Noe's workout plan) the fighters at Tintagel are gettin' some 'guns'.

The calibration standard on Avalon was just the same as Atlantia IMO. They hit hard, take hard, look good, wear good armour, NEVER whine and have a lot of fun. The weather is even the same if you compare DC to Tokyo.


Man, it would be great to go back to Japan. But I'll be in DC next and that's almost Avalon.

Okay, that video was a laugh. Lord Teo put that together from one of our recent beginner's classes.

Tintagel is run a member's club and as a school. The armoured combat program focuses on teaching SCA fighting from primarily from a WMA perspective. We are basically training people up so that they can go on an join the Avalon or the SCA. It is my hope that in the next year or so we will be sending units to fight in the wars in the States.

Actually, I've always worried that we didn't hit hard enough, but the recent push people have made to up their skills is really showing dividends. I'm very hopeful.

Oh, and Battle of Nations: It is my hope to put together a Japanese team.

I'm just surprised there's enough paying interest to run an SCA school, club?

How does the "member's club" system work?

Two types of membership: student and basic member. Basic Members can basically use the facility and attend all guilds and party events for no room fee. Guilds are like study groups conducted by the membership themselves, such as the chain armour guild. Members are welcome to organize their own parties and tournaments.

We also have classes with paid lecturers: German longsword, Ringeck sword and buckler, half-sword, Academy of chivalry, medieval sewing, and calligraphy. From next month we will also add medieval music appreciation and performance. People with student membership can attend any lecture, as many classes as they like in a month, all covered by the same fee. Folks with basic membership can also attend classes, but must pay a much larger per/class fee.

The Member's club system has been successful for us, and we like it muuuch better than the old system, in which folks paid for each class. The new system is much more social, and encourages folks to study a wider range of medieval skills.
