that is definitely a Donnghal helm (http://www.facebook.com/AesirMetalwyrks) the cutouts are Laura Wise I believe. Donnghal is making some of the coolest dark age helms for the SCA right now

I always thought it would be awesome to go to pensic with 3 or 4 kits from different time periods. Start the war as a Roman, end as a Landschnekt!

If I could afford to I would probably put together 3 or 4 more kits just because. But I really want to get my 14th c kit dialed in for Deeds and things first. ;)

One year I remember Sir Gaston walking into our camp to "visit" in a different kit almost every day. The one based on the "armor of mirrors" (or something along those lines) was quite stunning!

I don't have any stills of the new kit yet, but this is its inaugural day. First time fighting in it, many parts of it less than 24 hours old.

I must admit there is a part of me that thinks that, cool as it looks, the Plague Doctor outfit is more suited to Comicon than an SCA event. I know, I know. It all comes down to this: Do I believe this is something people would have made to wear? For FIGHTING?

Well not necessarily made for fighting, but it covers the anachronism (fencing mask) pretty well in my opinion. And who is to say a plague dr didnt get caught up in a fight at some point?

Indeed, we know doctors had swords in the 1540's, since the remains of one was one of the finds in the 'Barber Surgeons Cabin' on the Mary Rose. Now, that may be purely an affectation, or in relation to being on a fighting ship (where plague masks wouldn't necessarily be), but still....

Well. There are also accounts of plague dr's being abducted and held for ransom. You would think with these types of things happening, some dr's (lose term seeing as quite a few plague drs were not drs at all) would take protective measures against such unsavory individuals. :)

It occurs to me that the outfit is well post-SCA-period. Very cool, and I hope you stuff the beak with ambergris and laudanum. But you should know that it's VERY 17th century. Still, I'd rather see that than the crappy pseudo-cavalier and awful, half-arsed "musketeer" sh!te which predominates the SCA rapier field; that sh!t never existed AT ALL.

Again, well done, and know you've got a kit ready to go for any 1660s English reenactment you might want to do. ;)

Cheers,

Well, whilst the 1656 engraving is well outside 'Core' SCA, there are still Kingdoms who claim the end point is 1650. So, local Anthropology may play a part.

Personally, I want to encourage a shift to Helms generally, or helms concealing masks (the 'Best Dressed Fencer' contest run by Countess Anna von Urwald is well worth a look at for 'ways of dealing with the mask issue'. Let me know if you want the link).
