THose kingdoms violate the one core rule that the SCA has. Shame on them.Antonio wrote:Well, whilst the 1656 engraving is well outside 'Core' SCA, there are still Kingdoms who claim the end point is 1650. So, local Anthropology may play a part.
Personally, I want to encourage a shift to Helms generally, or helms concealing masks (the 'Best Dressed Fencer' contest run by Countess Anna von Urwald is well worth a look at for 'ways of dealing with the mask issue'. Let me know if you want the link).

Shame on a kingdom for accepting something that is a little past period?
but hey, no problem with plastic cup hilts, borderline fantasy armor (in some aspects), or blazon use of tennis shoes and cleats as fighting footwear. Lol

The SCA only has one rule: "Wear pre-seventeenth–century clothing."
It's not that hard.

not 100% sure of their sources but there is this:
Medieval doctors could not diagnose the disease properly at those times. It was generally believed that the disease was transmitted through a physical contact, via clothes and bed linen. The most infernal costume of the Middle Ages, the Plague Doctor costume, appeared on the base of those views. Doctors were supposed to wear those costumes to visit their plague patients. The mask of the plague doctor – the bird beak and the leather hat – was supposed to make a person look like an Egyptian divinity to scare off the disease. The beak, however, was actually a protective device to save the doctor from the unbearable infected stench. The beak was filled with medical herbs to ease the breathing process. The mask had two vent holes and glass inserts to protect the eyes. The doctor was also wearing a long waxed raincoat and leather or thick fabric clothes to help him avoid flee bites and physical contacts with patients.

I personally agree that 1600 is a hard cut off. But.... not everywhere agrees, and I believe it was not always thus, so some kingdoms retain the 'extended' period as part of their anthropology. Not my game, but when I've dealt with the beam in my own eye, I'll get on to the mote in other peoples!

Leaving everything else off, If the SOCIETY Governing documents say Pre-17th Century, then we play PRE-17th Century.
People who willfully go past that just because they want to believe "well it is REALLY 1650" are just using our lack of rules to stop them as an excuse to do it.
That being said, I have no idea if the plague Dr. is within period. I hope so, it looks WAY cool.

I agree that there needs to be a hard cutoff and the Society has chosen pre-17th century. There is a part of me that wants to say if we are hardass enough to say "I'm sorry but that suit you have spent a lot of time and effort on is 50 or 60 years too late." Then there should be a "costume nazi" at Troll who checks for tennis shoes, combat boots and hockey gloves to name a few and tell those people "No."

Re: 2012...Show us your kits
I would love to see the SCA keep the middle ages but branch into the rennisance period also. I would enjoy having two very different kits, one for earlier middle ages, and another for renn, without having to go to rennfairs. Nothing against Rennfairs but I dont want to deal with the fantasy crowds that tend to follow that circuit.

Said? The SCA DOES go into the Renaissance.... well into it! At least 150 years worth of it! The big thing we lose out on is Europe getting....... interesting.
So, we miss the tail end of the 80 Years War, all of the 30 Years War, and the Wars of the 3 Kingdoms ("English" Civil Wars). Big loss? Well, to some extent, because they really mark a clearer 'end point' to the 'feudal' society before that point. But as I say, that ain't the official game, so it's not how I play it. But, you know, there's enough wrong with my kit to stop me being too critical of the, "Uh, I'm set in 1600*mumble*" brigade.

I don't think that banning tennis shoes or hockey gloves would reduce things much at all. I don't think anyone would begrudge preventing tennis shows if the rule was enforced consistently and many kingdoms have banned hockey gloves for a while now. I can think of a lot of thing more egregious than single color combat boots.Said ibn-Ali wrote:But if you did that the SCA would become a MUCH smaller place. In truth, I wish everyone would just stop with the SOCIETY GOVERNING DOCUMENTS SAY PRE-17TH CENTURY crap... You're missing the point of the SCA.... we're a themed party... On our BEST day we most closely approximate an Authruian Fantasy, and on our off days we're MAD MAX....
If you really want to make the Society better, quit worrying about how someone else is breaking the timeperiod rules by a tiny margin and rather focus on not only making your OWN kit better, but help the new folks make thier kit better...
Also, isn't this thread supposed to be about showing off everyone's kits?

Very awesome, Zachos. As always, though! How does a thunk on the shoulder feel during one of those tournee fights? Seems like you don't have much up in that area.
Gosh, I really need to get my armor together, although I can't say I can come close to competing with the likes of so many here in quality!

Re: 2012...Show us your kits
Thanks Gerhard. Strangely, the lack of plate on the shoulders didn't actually cause any problems in this instance. Of course, the area is very small, and a difficult one to hit in this kind of combat. The lack of leg armour caused a slight pain, but no bruising, and the lack of Bevor caused a split top lip. On days two and three of the tournament I was more aware of the level of fighting, and upped my game considerably, gaining no more injuries and doing a lot better at staying in the fight. Unfortunately my wife's camera was out of battery by then, so the only videos I have are of me sucking on the first day.
As for your armour, don't even bother saying you'll come close, just do it. I've been working on these kits for three years, and they're finally at a stage where I'm getting happy with them. Still not ecstatic though: always things to do.

Actually I do. I should set up a time to sit down using some of proper stuff and get some good shots set up. This one was just me during the long 'chat' before the start of the Cot30, I'd spotted the camera and had good ol' 'Right Said Fred's .. I'm "happy" with this one now.........kinda.
Many improvements I'd like to do though.

I'd like to add a blackened maille drape for my helm. Etched stainless plates to go over the maille. Eventually maille chauses and etched knees. As of now the biker boots will have to suffice until I can afford better.
