Re: 2012...Show us your kits
This was the final version of my kit as Queen's Champion to Her Majesty Julianna de Pardieu (I'm on the right, but as an aside, on the left is Ulrich of Wiard, who also posts here on the archive, and both helmets were made by Gian di Fauro, who also posts here). I was going for a (poor guy) 3rd Crusade look.

Denewulf, I love your helm, that is the first one I've seen that doesn't look like an overbuilt goalie mask.

Thanks. I'm really happy with it. John/Gian did and awesome job on it. It fits really well, has great lines, and is comfortable to wear. Here's a closer pic:

Re: 2012...Show us your kits
I do hope you plan to move up the social ladder a bit. Your kit looks great right now, but if you had a long-sleeved hauberk and matching mail tied to the front of your shins to mimic chausses, at least far up enough to stay under cover of your surcoat, you'd look nearly fully armored for the time. A mail mitten on the sword hand and, well, you'd be very set.Denewulf wrote:I was going for a (poor guy) 3rd Crusade look.

Re: 2012...Show us your kits
Eventually, yes. The crusader is gonna be a slow build to (SCA) perfection. I'd always wanted to do it, but when I was asked to Champion Her Majesty (TRMs were doing a 12thC impression) I found some impetus to get the big part (helm) done. The surcoat basically covered the rest of my usual 'Viking' kit. Now that the reign is over, I'm going to put some serious focus into making my kit the 6thC Vendel Era Norseman I really am working to portray, but I do plan to continue working on the 12thC kit (chausses, a personal heraldic surcoat, long sleeve hauberk, mailled-hand protection, proper waster w/belt & scabbard, etc). I'm hoping to have the Vendel kit together come Gulf Wars for next year's thread.
And thanks!
And thanks!

How does one get in contact with him (John/Gian)? I'd like to get one of those...it'd go well with my Crusader persona.

How are those gauntlets working for you? I bought a pair but the thumbs just weren't up to snuff, even with thick padding. Great looking kit.

I dissagree. All the hidden plastic in his "sport" horse kit really games the system. In period, a REAL dog in a horse costume would have only had access to leather, bone, metal and paper mache...Varukh wrote:If that is the case...that is the best kit I have ever seen!Effingham wrote:The really impressive thing is that this is really a rottweiler who just has the PERSONA of a destrier.Andrew McKinnon wrote:

Andrew,
Very very nice !!

Is that saddle your own creation or one of Von Essem's?
Either way, I salute you. I hope to someday equal your achievement .

OK in due deference to all the great people involved in making the various pieces of this kit I will break it down by piece.
Missing: Leather chamfron by Rod Walker (wanted to show off the bridle so left it off.
Blue period bridle: Paula Winkel - she is looking for work so if you like, let me know!
Caparison: Blue silk by Talisien Bleechmore.
Saddle: Tree by Joram van Essen.
Covering, finishing and padding by Ian Lancaster.
Period stirrups: Maxim Suprovich
Things to do: finish my blue stirrup leathers. Heat blue the stirrups. Get a steel chamfron made. Down the track - blue leather barding.
Cheers

But Kilian, you at least have to admire the skill with which the costume was put together. Even if modern materials were used.Kilian_the_warlike wrote: I dissagree. BTW, in period a dog in a horse costume would have still access to real horse hair.

The gaunts overall are ok but the thumb design leaves much to be desired.Folcric wrote:How are those gauntlets working for you? I bought a pair but the thumbs just weren't up to snuff, even with thick padding. Great looking kit.

They are by Darkheart. While they are wonderful and a bag o' chips, I would not reccommend the Armorer as a business man. Negative numbers on the Frieman scale...

The kit looks awesome, Haldan! The vibrancy of the colors is a great change of pace from the black and other darker colors that seems to dominate the Society.

Thanks Swete! Funny Story (well to me anyway...) 14 years ago, as a Meridan I was wearing black tunic, pants, etc so as to fit in with my kingdom 'stuff'. One day at an event in the Niche where I went out and fought and fought and fought I excitedly asked my Lady "Did you see me? I did such and such" She said "No, I couldn't identify you on the field."
Ever since that day I've had some sort of bright color on me so that I could be identified from a Loooooooong way off. Matter of fact those blue leg wraps are juuuust about 14 years old.....
