Here's some pics from this past weekend. I would love to get an honest critique. My original idea was 1390, but now I'm shooting for mid 14th century. Please ignore the basket hilt sword, I had a major finger gauntlet blow out and am having to make due until I can get them repaired. I REALLY want a set of grieves, the kit just doesn't look right without them. Maybe I can pick some up at Gulf Wars...

From seeing it so often at practices, I would say that the two differnet color leather bits clash. If you could dye one or the other it would bring up the cohesion of the kit, IMO. But ya look good, man. And the greaves are gonna be rockin when ya get em.

Shoes. Get different shoes. Or, after you get greaves get sabatons! :) But I like the looks of it other than that!

Yeah... The legs are wax hardened, not dyed. I'll need to either remake the vambraces or legs in order to get that to match. Didn't have any bees wax when I made the vams, so I just dyed them to get on the field. Not sure yet whether I want to remake the vams or the legs.

Current plan is to have the turn shoes I'm wearing re soled, then covered in chain mail to look like chain sabatons. Gotta wait until I get the grieves before I worry about that though.

After you said they are turn shoes, and I took a closer look, you are right. They are fine then. The fuzzyness of the pics made them look like black combat boots! Sorry!

:D No problem. I can't fight in combat boots, they hurt my knees. I need the boots to slip so my knees don't.

Kaos ... wow .. just wow!

At the moment, my harness is pretty much still running with what I used most of last year. I'm pending the arrival of a SS Anshelm back point bascinet after which I'll most likely shift over to later 14th C. with jupon and full legs. Third shot is most recent from this past weekend @ Val Day/TOC.

Awesome! Firstly: that is why I love occular helms...they are just so darned inhuman and creepy when in even a slightly shadowy environment. Also, the thrusting tip placement on your axe is very cool!
Heck, your whole kit is cool. What metal is the lamellar plates made of?

This will soon by my new SCA kit for day-to-day "beater" use, reserving my nice later 15th century harness for greater things...

So I am biting the bullet and assembling a c.1390-1410 harness because there is nobody around here to play c.1450-1490 with me.

Here are the results of my efforts so far:

Obviously, it still needs work.

Soon to come for this kit:

1) new legharness, the knees for which are on order, and the cuisses and greaves for which are waiting in my basement.

2) fingers for gauntlets

3) plaque belt--already in the works

4) better polish

Both yours and the fellow you are fighting's kits look very nice! The split coloring on your helm gives an ominous impression.
Also, I gotta ask about the hand axe in the background....what is the construction method on it, cause it looks really good...

The guy that I am fighting is Murdock (Scott Adkins) and I think the axe has a rubber axe head with foam duct tape to it. The guy holding it is Sam Swalley.

Technically, this pic is from last fall, but this is still the kit as of right now. I have a new helm crest in the works.

Thanks everyone!
The belt is actually really easy. I incised a line next to the edge and then painted it with acrylic. Easy and pretty!

Accidentally put this in the Critique thread instead of here. Oh well.
Anyway, here is my kit as of right now. I am on the right with the brown turn shoes.

Swete, your kit is progressing nicely. The riveted mail shirt has drastically improved your appearance. If you can add mail and some brass occulars/crest to that helm it will take it from obvious Zweihammer kit to near period perfect. Feel free to contact me about how I did mine if you want. Rawhide edging for shields looks great, too. Looking good!

Thanks for the compliments and advice. I am in the process of tailoring my maille (which was made for a bigger guy) right now, and I am planning on using the chunks that I cut off, along with a bag of loose rings, to make a drape. As far as crests go, I would love to get some bronze instead of brass as I enjoy the rich color more, but I don't know if anyone even makes bronze add-ons.
A new, more period shield is one of the next things on my list. :)

Raymond's Quiet press uses bronze on most items, give it a polish though before you mount the stuff, it colors up nice

Swete, I used bronzes from RQP for my helm and a riveted mail coif I found on ebay that I cut to shape.
The rivet holes actually match up fairly well on the Zweihammer V6 with the RQP brasses. Not saying it is an exact match, but it is not too difficult.

My kit is transitioning at the moment, so I'm hiding it under a Hospitaller robe. Even my shoes have fallen apart :(

The cross is stained and too big, and it doesn't match my 14th century helmet, but I still like it :)

This is me at a single-sword tournament earlier this year.

Hi Columb,

Are those revival hybrid gauntlets you are wearing? How do they work for you?

Cheers,

Jan

They are. Mine are stainless, and a couple of other guys have spring steel versions locally.

The articulation in my right hand gaps, it seems the last lame doesn't have a lot of travel. The left works fine, so I'm not sure what the cause is. I'm still messing around with the best way to strap/sew in the gloves.

I'm enjoying using them, and have more sword control than I expected.

My only basis for comparison is my Bokalo "cat's ass" gauntlets, and the comparison is pretty similar. The revival ones have shorter cuffs (so better wrist freedom) and look much prettier.

Hope that helps,

Columb

This is me from this past weekend, I have new "soup can" knees and elbows I need to get set up and I need to have a surcote made.
