If so, we felt that they were just a little bit too thin to be really good.

I used something similar as bazubands, actually...

I used to use something very similar. My only suggestion would be to replace or cover the plastic knees with a low profile metal knee cop. The plastic will eventually crack so adding the metal is a must IMO.

I used something similar for about 3 years, downhill biking pads.

I added two ABS plastic wings onto the sides to meet minimums, and added a 6 inch belt of wax hardened leather above the knee that went under my thigh protection. I would also recommend putting a low profile metal cop over them. More than once I took low leg shots to the knee that left bone chips floating around my knees, and I couldn't kneel on my left leg for a year - though, for some reason I continued to use these modified pads them without metal knee cops.

After adding the extra weight (and having skinny calves), I've always had to tape them to my thigh protection. Doing this, I can pretty much do cartwheels or go rock climbing in them, but I did have to sink 2 bucks a day into cloth tape. Also, I like the shin protection a lot.

I prefer motocross versions as the plastic pieces tend to be thicker. Then again, I used a pair of street hockey versions that probably shouldn't have been legal for years, too.
