Thought y'all might like this.

West Kingdom March Crown Finals 2012 from last weekend.

Finals were Duke Sir Haouc of House Bender vs Viscount Sir Brand McClellan.

I understand from Duke Valgard Stonecleaver's blog (http://www.scafighter.blogspot.com/) that Brand made it most of the way using a short glave and Haouc used his trademarked "Doritos Chip" shield.

Duke Sir Haouc won and Viscount Sir Brand is Commondopolis.

Thanks for that, I was wondering who won. Even though I don't live in the west anymore, I still like to keep up with whats going on. Cheers!

I understand that in the finals of West crown, HE Brand felt that with his glaive, he had a strong advantage over HRH Hauoc. And so switched to sword and shield to remove said advantage and even the playing field so to speak.

That is what I hear.

Ogedei,
You are correct, that is exactly what Brand did.

I don't know the man well. But I would say that Brand did not want to win. <sigh> Going into the finals and then switching to a different weapon form than what got you there "because you have an advantage", really? He got to the finals with his weapons form as well. Your opponent is a duke....

just sayin'

there is nothing wrong with it, and the finals were still fun to watch because Brand is fun to watch and fight.

Wouldn't winning at a disadvantage be a greater victory?

:Wanting to win" does not necessarily mean wanting to use the utmost advantage. Friend of mine many years ago made the finals and lost. Talking with him afterward I opined that he was too nice and that for him to win he would need not to be quite so nice. He allowed that he didn't want to win if he had to stop being nice ;)

When he won, not too long after that conversation, he did it on his terms, and I congratulated him from the bottom of my heart for his success.

That wasn't my way of winning, but it was his. So, Brand may have wanted to win, he may have wanted it very much - but his definition of winning may include doing it within his personal parameters.

So the weapon that he fought with all day and got him to the finals wasn't the weapon he wanted to win with? So he deprived his opponent from the opportunity to best him with the style he opted for and that got him to the finals?

like I said, I don't know him or the situation well enough but we have discussed this type of situation often here on the AA and it just appears to me as I said above. Because honestly the other alternative is to claim arrogance and again I would rather not go with that claim.

I know Sir Bran very well, he is a very good friend. Many of us wanted him to keep his glaive because he was just on with it that day. However this not our Sir Brand here in the West.

Sir Bran is like the ultimate soul surfer of what we do in the SCA. He does not care much about winning, he only cares about incredible fighting and the challenge there in o the field of combat. He will only being a weapons to the field that will provide that in his own mind. I have seen him match weapon to his own disadvantage, for his chances in the tourney for years. He is always questing for that perfect fight, for the ultimate challenge he can find for his Knighthood.

One day I hope he will be our King, till then I will just be amazed this knight riding the waves of what we do with little regard for the outcome.

What was the discussion with the Marshals about in the first video?
