IIRC this was advice to the USA team about armour before the fight. I think it was the Russians or Poles that used about 40 lbs (kgs?) as the maximum that was feasible for melee. They felt that over that they were encumbered too much to move effectively. Hardened 1050 - 1075 was the standard metal with 18 gauge being the thickest (excepting the helm). They were given a list of armorers (mainly from the Ukraine) who did most of the BotN armor.

Several US armorers got the spec's and I believe that some team USA members ordered armour thicker than the recommended minimum. There was at least one comment from another team member that they wished they had used American armorers rather than the Ukranians as the Team USA's armor was thicker and their injury rate lower and injuries less severe. You'll have to talk with the members to get their specifics on their armour.

So you're right that was mentioned an upper limit, but it was more of "this is the maximum we've found feasible".

He appeared pretty gassed by the end too. Judges awarded it to the Polish fighter.
So he got a 5.0 from the eastern European judge?

Of course it just dawned on me that half the people on the Archive aren't old enough to get that Cold War joke.

EXCELLENT!! I'll order new sabatons (from Halberds if I can), spring-stainless cased greaves from Gaston (my cased greaves were made poorly because I gave bad specs to a good armourer) and a nice pollaxe from Baltimore Knife (I'll be living within a 30 minute commute of Baltimore), and I should be good to go.

The only consideration I have is my armet eye slot. This morning I did a quick test, and while it is highly unlikely, it is possible to get a blade through the eye slot. So I plan on getting safety glasses (non-prescription), flat black to cover my eyes (providing that they cannnot be seen from outside). The prescription, polarized sports goggles I've got are great, but they can be causually seen even when my armet is on. Ursus has some photographs that make me cringe. :(

Oh! Can SOMEBODY fly Ursus to the event next time? I bet he packs light and you could use the extra room for your armour....

Can anybody show me where sports goggles (to keep steel off my eyeballs, on my face is OK) would be banned? I'm talking about flat-black eye protection that should be invisible from view after my armet is on. Tonight my wife and I will test that and see if the eye protection can be seen. I know that some fighters had HUGE gaps in the face region, but I'm rather concerned I'll get "We told you that you'd put your eye out with that" from the Archive if I don't do something like this.

Hey since somebody suggested that round shields are easier to use in BotN, team America already has a design they can use.

From Facebook:

‎"In recognition of their outstanding debut at the Battle of the Nations Event (bnfest.pl), we would like to congratulate the entire USA Battle of the Nations Team (usaknights.org), by gifting each fighter with an author-signed copy of our brand new release "Royal Jousts."

At this time, we also would like to pledge our support/sponsorship for next years team, details to be determined.

Oh, yeah. Definitely swinging by the Freelance booth at Kalamazoo next week. I'm going to tell them I'm buying a copy specifically b/c of their gesture to the team.

This is posted on in the Classifieds, but I thought it might also be helpful here:

I get questions all the time on how to go about finding and getting sponsors. I figured that since I am a writer, I should put it down into a book. Since the whole print publishing thing is a pain, I thought that I could offer it to folks two ways - either a downloaded .pdf or a self-printed hard copy (printing is also more expensive). I also figured that $10 through Paypal would be a reasonable price for the .pdf. If you don't want to use Paypal, shoot me a PM and I'll give you the physical address to mail a check or money order.

It is called "The Jousters Guide to Sponsorship" and it goes into more detail than just strategies to find and acquire sponsors. Also, since it applicable to more than just jousters (potential BoTN fighters, are you listening?) I have already offered, and shipped a few, of the copies to our current USA BoTN Team for free (ALL CURRENT TEAM MEMBERS ONLY NEED TO PM OR EMAIL ME FOR A FREE COPY). I hope that they find them helpful in getting new and long-term sponsors.

If you want a copy, and you aren't a current USA BoTN Team Member, just shoot $10 usd to lclark0511@yahoo.com via Paypal and I will get your .pdf right out to you.

I will be leaving to compete in the Lysts on the Lake Tournament on Monday and will be staying the week following the tournament to receive my Early Act First Knight training, so if you don't receive it promptly, just know that I will out of town until then and will send out all of the pending orders when I get back!
