This Crown is the hardest one to predict since I started doing my Tourney Odds.

There is a lot of talent and a lot of experience. This is my best guess as to how they stack up.

Duke Dag Thorgrimsson 2 - 1

Duke Stephen of Beckenham 4 - 1
Earl Lutr Ulfskjald 4 - 1
Sir Ixtilixochitl 4 - 1
Sir Angus Gordon 4 - 1
Sir Cellach macChormach 4 -1
Sir Nikolai Grigorevich Petrov 10 - 1
Sir Gunnar Redboar 10 - 1
Master Einar Haakonsson 20 - 1
Sir Kjartan Eikbrandrson 20 - 1
Sir Lothair von Drachenstein 20 - 1
Baron Artair macNeacail 30 - 1
Master Zygmunt Nadratowski 50 - 1
Baron Robert Downey 50 - 1
Master Thomas Penyngton 75 -1

Is this Havards first Crown? I have only fought him a couple of times, and he has some way cool talent; but I have a hard time seeing someone win on their first attempt.

Dag always does his best in tournament; he has one of the best 'head games' around. (in a good way) I don't see anyone likely to beat him on the list. Oddly, I think the person with the best shot is Stephen. If Beck can get past his own head game, I think he can get passed Dags.

According to Palymar's FaceBook:

Final Four
-Dag vs. Lutr (Lutr needs two wins to advance)

-Gunnar vs. Havard (Havard needs two wins to advance)

I must say the final kill from Duke Dag was amazing to watch. I was on the other side when I seen it, so the duck was slightly obscured. Seeing it from this side, it looks just as amazing. It was an excellent bout, and ended a great day of fighting.

So what was up with all the active marshalling? Did the Crown call for that or did the Earl Marshall?

Yeah that was a hell of a lot conversation breaking out. I don't like it.

The King specifically asked this of His KEM and Chivalry marxhaling the day.

ick.

I don't know which I hate worse. The climate that needed the King to ask for so much clarification or the fact that so much needed to be "clarified" even after it was requested.

just ick.

It was rather extensive on some fights, lasting anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Made for a very long day.

Talking is not what the list is for. The shot is good, or it is not. There's nothing to say that lasts more than 15 seconds. "My lord, that was light." Or, in a worst case scenario: "My lord, I feel I am putting everything I have behind these shots, are they just not landing with any force?" "No, they just aren't." Marshals can offer insight to the geometry of the blow, but the one to call the shot is the one in the armor.

Last crown, I was in a bout where my opponent thrusted my solar plexus. It caught my tabard and my gambeson and slid across my chest. I told him it slid. The marshal argued with me that it did not. I reiterated that it did, indeed. He said again that it did not. No fight is worth that argument.. so I yielded at that point, saluted my opponent, and left the field.

The Lists are fields of Honor, and we are Men and Women of Honor. Any discussion of blows where it is believed that an opponent is not calling shots is a situation where there is a belief that individual is honorless. Personally, I will not take part in such contests. If my opponent calls light.. it was light. Period. It is my duty to make my shots land with no doubt. We as fighters can ask questions honorably, but the goal must be to improve "us"..as fighters. Not to make accusations of dishonor. Marshals can, and should, facilitate the ability to communicate confusion, they can see flat blows or poor technique when we are unable to perceive it. But those conversations really do not need to be long. A marshal can say how things "Look." A Sovereign can find a combattant unfit for his list and remove him. But no one may call the blow but he who received it. This is per Society rule, a rule that may not be made less strong by regional or kingdom law or tradition.

Yes, there are those whom I have to hit much harder than others. I will, and have, discuss that different calibration with the individual involved, but I will not do so in front of a collection of individuals watching an honorable fight. I will fight my hardest, find a way to best my opponent or be bested, and move on. Later, in private, we'll talk. And I pretty much do talk to every opponent after bouts in tourneys..especially in Crown. To make sure they are ok, and that any questions are clear.

Honor and challenge, that is why we fight. If we don't believe in the honor of our opponents, we have no place raising arms against them on a field of honor. And I won't. There are those whom I will not fight for that reason. If that costs a Crown, I don't care. My, and my Consort's, honor is more important.

Pretty sure this makes it OK by definition. At least for use fealty types. We had a king recently make us put cross hilts on our basket hilted swords for crown. And the weird thing was that it might have made them look better!

Well, no not really. What it means is that we will comply with our sovereigns wishes. It doesn not mean that there is no disagreement. We are also commenting in a Non-SCA context about our understanding of things. I am also not publicly questioning "my" king. :-)
