The Armour Archive

Can anybody recommend anybody else who carves rattan into more than flat planks and sells their work? I know three individuals on the Archive who carve their own stuff, but nobody else who does it commercially. I found a website devoted to carved wasters (waffenworks), but didn't get a reply to my inquiry on their site over a month ago.

Believe it or not, my first plan for what became foxknife.com was to create a fan site not a store. I didn't start carving until a purchase of a carved waster fell through.

I also do not know of anyone besides you who is selling. I cannot seem to find the waffenworks site you are speaking of either, could you post the address?

That was from Eldric von Atzinger, and I don't believe he sells carved wasters anymore either.

Strange. I was inspired by your work.

I also helps that Galleron lives in my shire and very little I do will ever equal him shaving a pair of 9' tapered rattan spears. The taper REALLY changes the balance and bend dynamics but also makes them difficult to grasp.

I made the sword that inspired Edric back in 2005 or so.
I have toyed with the idea of selling stuff but like my vacuum pressed shields I will probably never have the time to make more than a few for my own use and gifts for friends.

Can you elaborate on the process and the tools that you use for this? I do a lot of fac forming with plastic but never with metal. I am guessing that the tool set is very different but maybe not.

Actually they are laminated wood done in a vacuum bag.
Take a look at this video to get an idea of what I am taking about, especially around the 2:25 mark.

That makes a lot more sense, I was wondering how vac forming could possible work with metal.

Wow, even sword carving has a lineage.

In Gleann Abhann, Earl Sir Brian McBrand carved an incredible 9' spear out of rattan. When he was done, it looked just like a horseman's lance, but was useable on foot. He has a shop called Darkwood Armoury, but I don't know if he sells carved stuff or not.

Since I own a Darkwood basket hilt that I got in trade, my guess would be not.

MacFinn, I haven't seen any besides yourself. Not on a consistent basis.
