I know it's a shameless plug but last year a few said they would like to make it some time.

My favourite tournment of the year. I highly recommend anyone to go check it out. It is one of the biggest tournments in the SCA.

Yes, great event...if anyone is looking for a big winter tourney to travel to I can highly recommend it.
Often close to 200 fighters and everyone gets at least around 20 fights with the top 16 going through to a double knockout.
Have never won it myself and now I don't get to fight in it this year...

Your Highness
I've heard this said before and thought it odd. Why is it a King can't fight in what technically is just a Baronial prize tournament?

After several years of trying, it looks like I will be comming to this event. Any suggestions to outlanders for this event? Besides the "dorms" what is the lodging situation like? What is not to miss?
Thanks!

Here is the page with lodging info.

As to what not to miss. That would depend on how long you'll be up here and what interests you have.

I don't know if his Highness is not fighting because of injury or because he chooses not to.
While there is no rule prohibiting the King from fighting in a baronial tourney, personally I felt that winning Crown was an awesome day for me. Winning Ursulmas would be a close second. I felt that I had my awesome day in September and I didn t want to interfere with one of my subjects having an awesome day. Honestly I don t think it would have been very likely for me to win Sept Crown and Ursulmas in the same year (that would be Sven good, I don t suck but I am not Sven good:-) but thinking about fighting the tourney while on the throne just felt wrong to me. No judgement towards any one else if they choose to compete while reigning it just wasn t right for me.

I was just curious. Because one of Duke Skapti's former Squires (Sir Einar) told me that last time he won Crown he said that he was a little disappointed because he couldn't fight at Ursulmas.
I also understand that when you take on the responsibility your time isn't always your own.

I will be there for three days (Fri-Mon). I try to keep an open mind when visiting other areas- niffty local historical and cultural sites. Places with scenic beauty or great people watching oppertunities. Sorry to be vague.
Oh, Coffee-Best coffeeshop in the area?
Also, (besides the fighting) is there anything you would recommend at the event?

For a few years, Ursulmas was a good indicator for May Crown.
As for Crown's not entering tournaments, it's always been an culture thing. When I started in Drachenwald, the crown fought in everything, since you only had 4 fighters.
Now, back to Ursulmas and things to do. Living locally, I tend to go out to the site to get signed in on Friday night (this becomes VERY important on saturday morning). However the site itself tends to be pretty dead, with the exception of Vigils.
Saturday is the big tournament. There is archery and fencing going on as well. It will be an all day affair. Most people are spent when the tourney is over. If you have any energy left, Stevens pass is east of the site by about an hour, and are open till 10pm for skiing and snowboarding
Sunday has 2-3 more tourneys. Bear Meat is for fighters who are unbelted and have never won a tournament. There is an over 40 tournament for the elderly (note to self, duck various dukes and knights for the forseeable future), and lastly, the last 2 years, we have had a historical kit tourney. It's mostly based on identifying aspects on our kits that we need to improve to get a better look, i.e. have a kit that is consistently based on one time and culture.
For things to do around the area, Highway 2 runs up into the mountains with plenty if hiking/snowshoeing, Seeing as how you are coming up to fight, that will probably be LOW on the priority list. Mostly I would run into Seattle for touristy stuff. Space needle, waterfront, Pikes Place market (which also has the first Starbucks)
As for which places to get coffee, it depends. Most places have at least ok coffee in the area. There's just too much competition not to. I view Starbucks like McDonalds though, it's not a great product, but you know what your not great product is going to be like when you order it.

I'm going. Figure the best way to back into fighting seriously is to jump in the deep end.

I would like to congratulate Duke Ibrahim Al Dimashqi of Artemesia for besting a field of 136 (best estimate right now) fighters this last Saturday. The final was Duke Ibrahim Al Dimashqi over Duke Skeggi Nyewcombe in 2 best 2 out of 3. It was a very hard fought and deep tournament.

This is Crinnthann's channel, so the video is mostly of him and his friends. Two of my fights from the Bear Meat tourney are in there.

Great day, fun to watch!
One followup. As Crown you have a quite busy day, if I were to fight it would mean I was ignoring other stuff I should be doing....
