Anyone had a chance to check this out? I'm thinking it could make for a good base layer for your gauntlets.

I'd consider using them. I love my four pad zoombang shirt. It is one of my favorite piece of armor, especially when worn under a gambeson. So I'd be willing to try these, especially with the wrist coverage on them.

What is the body of the glove made of?

If it is stretch/elastic material, might be difficult to use "stiched in" to the gauntlet.

They will probably sell the pads seperately.

That's why I haven't ordered a pair to try. That's right where my gaunt tends to rub.

When I ordered my shirt, they customized the pad locations for free, and they included the pads I had them leave off. I have no doubt they would add a pad for just the cost of the pad.

Hmmm. Maybe I will order a pair then.

I emailed Tom Kohut at Zoombang and he said he could add a reinforced thumb for $10. This would be less than a wide custom piece modeled after hourglass gauntlets (my suggestion), but more than a simple oval.

We also discussed the direction of common blows to the thumb in relation to pad placement: sliding down the stick instead of a right angle.

I'm the guy who asked Tom to put them together. I've got two sets. One is a much better glove than the other (grip-wise and durability-wise) and has one large pad covering the back of the palm. He added the wrist padding to it when I asked him to. In testing they have done just fine by themselves inside my gauntlets without finger padding. I think it's because my gauntlets are clamshell moric boxes, which means they have a ton of space inside them in the first place, and the padding on the back of the palm is thick enough that it absorbs whatever impact does get through just fine. The grip on that glove is incredible. If I knew what it felt like to wear sharkskin gloves I would probably call it equivalent. Getting wet doesn't change the grip in the least, either. About the only thing I haven't done is drag my palms through wet muddy grass to test them. The palm is just now starting to separate from the rest of the glove but so far it's completely minor.

The second set is like the picture above - padding on the individual finger joints and etc. It works OKAY but not spectactular IMO. The glove itself isn't all that great - it looks and feels like those cheap ones you get for gardening. This has all been a couple of years ago now, so maybe the glove has changed some, but Tom said at the time that he couldn't get any other glove for that sort of setup.

I've mentioned them before but I always had to say that I didn't know how much Tom was going to charge for them because mine were basically the test models, and after all the feedback I gave about them I never did hear them say they were going to set up a product line. If you want to buy a set I'd suggest you ask for the ones with just the back of the palm and the wrist coverage. The finger pads look great, but all I can say about them is that I don't know that they would be any use inside anything but a fingered gauntlet, and the glove itself on that set isn't all that good.
