Advice for the Deed of Arms at Gulf?

Post by Caius705 »

I've never tried combat of this style before and I'd like any advice that y'all can give me.
I'd been planning to figh with a buckler or a small center grip shield and a mace (this being the style I feel most comfortable with)
After watching videos of the Thirty at pennsic online, I'm beginning to have second thoughts.
Should I instead switch to a two handed weapon? If so, a poleaxe or something else?

I'm concerned with range and being swarmed by poles. I feel confident in my ability to throw a solid shot with my mace (my own design, no kong toy) and am most comfortable inside of A or B range, no matter what I'm fighting.
If I stay with my shield and mace, besides being highly mobile, what else should I focus on?

Any and all advice is appreciated. I'm very excited about this fight, I can't imagine a better way to celebrate my first year in the SCA.

Buckler against pole arm is a pretty tough game for the buckler guy. If you really want to go for that, I'd try to block the first shot using both your buckler and the mace together, since it's easy to blow through either on their own, then you'll need to close in to belly to belly range and get a hold on your opponent's haft or quillions if he has a great sword. If you can get there, you'll probably do pretty well, though the strategy is likely to only work against guys who don't have a buddy backing them up.

Particularly as a newer fighter I'd recommend maximizing your odds of success by fighting with a pole axe with a fairly light head, and teaming up with some experienced fighters. Because of the multiple hits, team work is more important in this fight. Expect it to be more violent than regular SCA fights. Bring good ransoms. It's a phenomenally good time.

Don't take a knife to a gunfight or a mace to a poleax fight.

Just my $.02.

Don't fall down. Those guys will ride you under and turn your blood into the soil. ;)

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.
