Javelins with finger loops

Post by Mac »

I don't usually post to the Combat and Weapons board, but I thought someone might be interested in the thing I just found.

Here is a pic of a Spanish Resurrection from about 1430 or so. The guard on the viewer's left has a couple of those javelins that we see sometimes, but mostly don't pay enough attention to. The image can be found here

Cropping out the guy in question shows that he has (red!) finger loops on his javelins.

Zooming in further, shows how they are bound to the shafts with cord.

Tod does a video on these here, and a follow up video herer

I must thank Tom B. for turning my on to this photo-stream.

The craftsmen of old had their secrets, and those secrets died with them. We are not the better for that, and neither are they.

Some of us ancient guys should really try these out (I am broke and lack a backyard). There is an early 13th century inventory of equipment for galleys with pisanes of plates and javelins.

The bottom of the Darius Mosaic from Pompeii may show a javlin with finger loop on the ground, nobody photographs that detail though https://www.flickr.com/photos/profzucke ... otostream/
