Lead pommels for rattan weapons

Post by Noe »

A friend of mine is casting a lead pommel around his rattan bastard sword. Anyone ever tried this. Any cautions (other than to not eat the lead)?

I used lead pommels for a while until the commercial ones where available. I used to cast a large eyed lag bolt into it to attach it to the sword. The one thing to watch out for is that the force put on the pommel with normal use will split out the rattan. I solved this problem by cutting a short piece of 1" copper pipe and forcing it over the base of the rattan before screwing the pommel in. I never had a problem with mine. When they get dented up they are very easy to recast.

But really, Mandrake sells his pommels really cheap. I just got another one for like $10. Its the crosses that are expensive.
