Double bitted (sp?) axes

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Double bitted (sp?) axes

Post by snobassman »

When I first joined the sca and was discussing weapon construction with some of the other members of our group I was told that the double bitted axe was a purely fantasy weapon, but upon watching Knives, Swords and Axes on the history channel last night, I noticed them speak of a double bitted axe as a historical weapon. It showed it as being an innovation added to the standard battle axe allowing the wielder to attack on the backswing.

Now, I was wondering if any knows what era these began showing up in, and in what parts of the world?

Thanks for any help
