Will you be there this wed.? I live about 12 minutes from there and was very curious about it. I went to Kiss a few times about a year ago to let Goth and the others wack me around. Honestly I have to say everyone I met there was very nice and helpful. I told them I was doing some jousting and steel work but wanted to try SCA out. That Goth guy was very nice and willing to teach. I got involved hard and heavy with my job and starting a family so I dropped off the scene. I will try real hard to make it out there this wed. If nothing then to check it out and meet peeps.

My schedule will not likely allow me any time on the 14th (that is when I fly in and meet up with the rest of my coworkers) and the Sunday practice is during the day and we'll be setting up for a trade show that day. So Wednesday it is!
With Crown so close I hope everyone will be bringing their "A" game! Ohhhh I can feel the bruises already!

Woohoo, new people to fight!
Stephen: between myself and Guaire we should have enough loaner gear to get you on the field and fighting so definately come out.
Ewan:Hope you like fighting lefties, there's usually 3-4 at this practice (and no, I'm not one of them

). Regardless, there will be plenty of us there.

Lefty's? What are those? We don't have very many up here so any time against lefties will be very beneficial. (likely painful too

If it gets to be a bore, I'll gladly fight you right-handed. I've been slowly working on getting competent at it. I want to reach a level where I don't feel totally worthless against 99% of SCA knights with it. Right now I don't feel totally worthless against about 30% of SCA knights with it. I have a ways to go.
No one at Red Bug is fighting in crown list this time. It's a fun practice where everyone mostly plays nice and is happy. Every once in a while some oversized or overarmoured punk will inspire some smackdown, but that's the exception.

Im not big but I am not too small either and I do wear a decent amount of armour. Most of my mild kit was sold to archivers last month and I am having a stainless one made but a friend of mine is letting me borrow stuff from time to time. The few guys I fight with do steel work so we do wear a decent amount. I will say this, the last time aI took part in any SCA fighting it was really forgein to me. The style and kind of swings really threw me. I have fought with Adren guys as well and it was way different than SCA too. I just hope to meet some cool people and not get too wmacked around. LOL

I hope Stephen didn't pick this week to show up at Red Bug. I got home from a long day of clinicals at about 5:30 and promptly went to sleep. Thorstenn and Zephyrine didn't show up either. I'm not sure who did.
If you are in the Orlando area, you should come out to Baldar's on Saturday. we will be doing a lot of shop stuff getting ready for Gulf Wars but there should also be fighting. If so, then it would be a pretty good example of fighting in the SCA and we might even be able to get you into loaner armour. Email me if you are interested (nathanrenaudATyahooDOTcom)

I went thier tonight and I met up with Loegaire. He as well as the others were very nice and took the time to show me what the SCA does as far as fighting. I gotta tell ya it is damn hard to feel good about striking the helm when your a steel guy who does not target head. lol I fight steel with about 5 guys and we do not target the head and quite often strike shield whilst looking for a body shot or take down move. We shield bash and helm butt as well. we fight to the yield plus with full cuff gaunts on and a sword with a basket I found it hard to do the wqrist action shots they do in the SCA. The guys told me there are scadiens who wear them and fight well so I figure I will keep wearing them and do the best I can. The helm I have came with three visors and the bad part is the bargrill does not come down enough and is not thick enough. I wore my hundskull and the vision is good but no wear near the bargrill. Nevermind the whole breathing thing either.

The Marshall there was very helpful. I bought two different gorgets and he took the time to see me in my helm and compare gorgets and let me know which one to use. They did no beating on me at all cause I was coming from a totally different aspect of fighting. I will go back next wed. to try somemore. I was pleased overall and I liked the verbal exchange of steel practices vs. sca.

Hey Stephen!
Sorry I missed that practice. I would love to come and check out you and your buddies's steel group sometime. When and where do you practice? It sounds like a blast, though I think I would have to start real slow so as not to accidentally moulinet anyone in the head
You are also welcome to come out to our gathering on saturday. I'm a little uncertain what the agenda is and how much fighting will actually be going on vs working on projects (crossbows mostly) but there will be food on the grill, beer in the evenning, and probably a bunch of watching of SCA video after dark which you might find enlightenning or entertainning depending on your perspective.
I can probably help you with the gauntlet thing.
In return, maybe you can help me by showing me what you guys do and how well it works for you. I'm always looking for more info on how other groups work in order to better understand how we might grow ourselves.
I'll send you my number privately...
