Youth fighting in the SCA

Post by SirSylvanar »

I am wondering if there is any under 18 fighting in the SCA. If there is then what kind is it, and what weapons and armor are used?

Greetings.

Yes, some kingdoms have YOUTH COMBAT. To find out more about it look up youth combat in your kingdom and see if it is allowed. Your kingdom website should have information regarding this.

I'm not sure if your kingdom has youth combat and perhaps someone here is located near you. However it may be some time before you get another answer so I thought I would point out something for you to research before then. Good luck.

Both the kingdoms of the East and Aethelmearc have youth combat. It is normally done using foam boffer weapons while the children wear some form of protective gear. Normally hockey equipment (unfortunately). The rules are pretty much the same as for heavy combat and it is divided into age groups. I am unsure of what those are as its been awhile since I brushed up on my rules. Check either

www.eastkingdom.org

or

www.aethelmearc.org

And look for youth combat rules. I'm sure you'll find all the information you need there.

Grendal, for the Texas rules see http://www.ansteorra.org/publications/forms/participants.pdf

At 12 he can choose between youth rapier and youth boffer combat. In youth boffer he can use one-handed or two-handed padded weapons and shields. While hockey gear still dominates the field, more metal helms and accurate armour are beginning to appear.

Note that all Ansteorran youth combat activities require a parent or legal guardian to be present at the field. A good first step would be for your friend and a parent to visit a local fighter practice.

There will be a Youth Academy event in Rockdale on April 23rd which would be a perfect opportunity for your friend to learn more.

For Texas, I haven't a clue. But here in Calontir, we get to start fighting at 16  But with parental consent, of course :(

In Atlantia adult heavy Fighting is 16 with parental concent, and of course in the adult heavy fighting we have no weight, age, or sex divisions. In youth combat in Atlantia we have 3 divisions 8-10, 11-15 and 16-17. Kids 16 & 17 who decide to authorize in the adult division can no longer fight youth combat.

Aethelmearc requires you be 18 before you can start heavy fighting. Not sure what our age groups are for boffer though.
