Rattan/ bambo?

Post by Hugo de Stonham »

I saw a picture of rattan the other day and thought it looked alot like bambo. My question is are they the same or are they different? If they are different can I use bambo to make a SCA sword?

They appear similar externally, but they are different, and you can not use bamboo to make a sword.

If I recall correctly... isn't bamboo hollow?

Rattan is solid through and through.

They are similar in appearance, but NOT for SCA purposes.

They are in the same plant family. Bamboo, however, is hollow, save for at the joints.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. -Aristotle

Grendal,

is there a specific reason why you don't want to use rattan?

grendal,

Show up at a fighter practice and ask. Alot of people have some extra rattan sticks laying around. If not then at the next local event (Elfsea Springfair in a few weeks) there is almost certainly a merchant that will have some.

To answer your question Grendal. NO, Rattan is the only legal way to make a list legal weapon.

What "other" types of stuff did you have in mind and why?
just curious.

You can cover the ratan with siloflex, but its still rattan.
Spears can be out of fiberglass pole.

Check the SCA.org site for all the juicy details.

We'll Irish I was wondering if siloflex could be used but someone already said the core has to be rattan so that answers my question.
