Who are the best in your Kingdom?

Duke Gaston by far is the best I have seen, followed by Duke Alinon? of Meridies, Earl Drake, Sir Kurn, and last but certainly not least Duke Baldar. Wow that would be a great tournament :D . Hmmmm maybe next Gulf wars?.

Thorstenn the wronghand
Squire to Sir Kurn of Trimaris

Good, Bad, I'm the guy with the spear

In Atlantia I would have to say that the best spearman is Duke Michael of Bedford

In Meridies (where the average army muster is 4 shields, 40 spears) that's a tough question. In no particular order:

Duke Ailgheanan mac Sithigh
Grof Tar Radu
Sir Elesar of Northumbria (current Tanist of Gleann Abhann)
Duke Kane Redfeather
Visc. Rey Ribeaumont

I am probably missing somebody, but that is who comes to the front of my mind.

Broinnfinn

Karl Von Sussen and "that damn spear" would rank right up there here in the East.

Now is this overall... melee and in the lists are two separate animals with a spear.

Duke Prothal of Drachenvald

I got to fight with both of those guys at Estrella... and you just ain't whistlin dixie... they annihilated entire lines of people... effortlessly...

Add in HG Dongal from Calontir...
And Sir Asoph, he'd whoop Drake's but anytime :)

Prothal is pretty good with a spear. I would also put Count Arlof right up there, and Krakken Gnashbone (who I think still has the record for most kills in a Field Battle at Pennsic- pre- face thrust days no less) done with a spear.

There is also this other guy who I can't think of his name- He is not from the middle or east because I have fought against him in the Allied Champions before. He wears like some sort of plaid surcoat or tunic kind of thing...

He is damn good.

Duke Prothall gets my top vote.

Master Aethstan gets my honorable mention. (he uses a shortish, 6-7 foot glaive) but uses it more for thrusting than as a two handed weapon.

You cannot leave out VC Mike the Mace of Meridies. His spear tip control is amazing. Also Radu(aka Moose) ,current prince of Glen Abhan in Meridies, aint half bad with the long spear either. Of course his arms are nine feet long to start with! :D

But I think these gentleman are the top Meridian spears
HG Kane
HG John the Bearkiller
HG Alinon (spelling?)

We have some GREAT spearmen in all of the Kingdoms. In the East, Sir Griffith of ICOD is one of the best in our Kingdom. His whole house fights well with the weapon. Duke Gregor is awesome too.

The best I have EVER seen in the known world is heads and shoulders above anyone else I have ever seen.....

Duke Avaloc of An Tir.

I love fighting spear in melees, but I will galdly carry a shield and let Mr. Bane work any time he wants to...

If he is on the other side, he is dead though, cos I'll throw troops at him all day long to keep him off the field.

He has my respect.

If I were Picking my top 5 Meridian Spearmen it would have to be (in no particular order)

Duke Ailgheanan mac Sithigh
Viscount Rey Reibomount
Earl Robert Glendon of Auk
Count Seth of Newcastle
Duke John the Bearkiller
-then there are about 10 people tied for 6th -

Outside of Meridies the amazing ones to me are

Earl Brannos- Middle
Viscount Tristan - Northshield
Sir Richard of Wolfwood - Calontir

Ulrich

Here is a little known spear God-
Sir Gerwulf from Darkmoon

I certainly don't suck at spear, but I don't have anybody close by to get me to true God-level.

Master Galleron (Should be Sir, in my opinion) of the East is no slouch with a spear...

Good worthy Sir Vitus. I am just learning the noble art of the footman lance. But being in a shield wall for the Legion I have seen some great spear work as well been on the receiving end of it.

I recently was honored to fight alongside Sir Gerwulf from Darkmoon and I would like to mention he is an amazing.

You mentioned of Earl Sir Brannos as well, whom I can not begin to count the times he has pulled my posterior from the fire in a grand melee. Well he has also lead me to the fire. I can remember clearly following his orders to find out it was only him and I his shield 15 feet in front of pushing back the line in front of us during the Abbey battle.

But another man of note that has been a major influence in the Metro Detroit area of the Middle is Master Master Sir Trelogin Tavistock. It is through him and Earl Sir Brannos that the spears of the Legio Draconis have formed their bite. The two people that new comers to the noble art of the footman lance in our area are told to go to learn is Brannos and Trelogin.

Yea, like Princess Broinnfinn, who slips under peoples radar and kills them before they know it. Been around long enough to have seen it happen many times. Ld Robert McReagan does the same thing. Floats right under the big guys and nails people before they know he is there. Two sneaky spear-people I would love to have on my side any day.

I would add:
Viscount Mike the Mace
Duke Jon the Bearkiller
Sir Lee Fribrand

I can another who I am a a fan of his personality, but he is an outstanding spearman, Ld Clancy Fairchild.

Unfortunately great spearmen can often fail to show up on radar. Spear is my favorite weapon and I have been a party to many a duel and many a spear-only tournament. There are spearmen I watch out for on the battlefield without knowing their names at all.

I think that Meridies and Trimaris have more than their share of quality spears. Quality spears are the best asset that Meridies (and Glenn Abhan) bring to the field and several of their best have been mentioned but I my mind these two stand out as "World-class":

Duke Ailgheanan mac Sithigh
Duke John the Bearkiller

Trimaris has it's share of quality spears as well:Baldar, Yoan, Kurn, (Wulfhere when he was active), Morgan, Wilfred (the only unbelt on my list) and I dare to add myself to this list. Such hubris, yet I an still undefeated in the 10 spear tournaments I have fought in. To narrow the list to "World-Class":

Duke Baldar
Sir Kurn

For Ansteorra, there is Alaric Drake and several others that I do not know by name but i know them when they take a stance accross the line from me.

Earl Alaric Drake

With other kingdoms my knowledge becomes embarassingly poor but one man stands out:

Duke Aveloc

My vote for all-timer. Several reasons. Every battle I have ever seen him fight a spear in has had it's outcome shifted dramatically by his presense. Also, in one of the field battles at Gulf Wars X after I was dead I watched from the sidelines while he killed no less than 20 men. I don't know how many he killed before I died. 20 men is a memorable feat for a static battle such as a bridge of fort, but in an open field it is phenominal. My personal best was the first field battle at this year's Gulf Wars where the stars were in alingment and the troops formed up just right so that I probably got about 22. I was aided by circumstance and piles of dead troops surrounding me for protection. Aveloc did his feat on the run in a very dynamic battle. Lastly, Aveloc is the only spearman in the last ten years that I have fought pickups with that totally handed me my ass. He probably got 80% or more out of an hour of one on one.

It is my goal to see that the Gulf Wars spear tournament we started this year continues and grows and that the renoun of quality spearmen who often go unnoticed will spread like the renoun of sword and shield guys already does.

Yours in arrogance,
Gaston

A name most of you may not know, but should surely be mentioned among these worthies -- West Kingdom's Sir Stephen of Greenwood. He doesn't get out to inter-kingdom events much (his family is not SCA, so it's hard for him), but he's phenomenal. Probably helps that he used to be a pool shark :-).
