fiberglass spear

Post by losthelm »

how do I make a take down spear from a regular spear.

I would rather not but space constraints are bending my arm on this one.

also what can I use for a splice as far as matereal goes?

whats the best way to cut the spear?
I was thingking of taping it and then cutting it about three feet from the back end.

First you get a solid extruded fiberglass splice. I got mine from Mandrake, but others may sell them too.

Then you cut your spear- I recommend using a hack saw as the finer teeth will cause less splinmtering. 3 feet from the end is great.

Affix 1/2 the splice into the 3' section. An epoxy works well for this. Depending on the splice and spear, you may need to thicken the splice a bit to get a snug fit, duct tape a single layer at a time until the splice is quite snug. Pull out, apply your glue, and put into place.

Use plenty of tape when joining the two spear pieces together before a battle- too little will allow someone to take the 6' section leaving you with the 3'. This is very annoying, take my word for it. :-)

As a bonus, if you ever feel like using a 12' spear (allowable in the Midrealm) just put your 3' extention onto a 9' spear and go. Also, if you can get a 12' section of fiberglass for your spear material, it can be cut into 2 equal pieces to use as replacements when the longer bit gets broken, and it eventually will. Some people think it's funny to break spears in a fight.

Hope that helps,

Garth
