Fighting vs. Medieval fighting

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Amen. I still check eBaymotors for a stripped M3 Roadster like my old one that I can use as a platform for a '62 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider.

As to Nissan's question I play tons of people who don't resemble anything middle ages today so having a stadium full of fans would be a big plus. A Paul Chen helmet and a cotton t-tunic does not a Medievalist make. ;)

The sport would never work in a modern setting however as the mass majority is conditioned by the media to enjoy sports that have a ball as its focal point.

That being said I think rugby would be incredible if you added some aspects of SCA combat to it.

We do have somthing similar: it''s called Olympic Fencing.

It was fun as a diversion, but not something that I'd do as a sport.

Without the honor aspect, there is no way to judge blows without some sort of judging system-electronic or otherwise. Without real weapons, it would be pretty hard to stop someone by just repeatedly whacking them.

So, we're stuck with fencing-style fighting where an outside judge determines victory, and it would be very difficult to decide who struck who with sufficient force.

Nope. Without the medieval aspect, even the nodding acquaintance to history that most of the SCA has, the culture of honor and chivalry on the field would disappear rapidly IMO. I've no interest in UFC with sticks.

Well, there's something missing from the question -- context.

Scenario #1:
There's stadium fighting, and no SCA. I would probably do it, because I like hitting people with weapons of mostly any sort. Might even end up good enough to make Felix's team someday (seeing as how it's a paying gig, I could afford to train more).

Scenario #2:
There's stadium fighting, and SCA. I'd probably dabble, but I get a lot more out of the SCA than just fighting.

Scenario #3:
There's no stadium fighting, and SCA. That's where we are now.

Scenario #4:
There's no stadium fighting, and no SCA. :( :( :( :( :(

No. Wearing "real" armour is half the fun.

Nope. A) I like armour. B) Without the culture of idealized chivalry, the game would quickly become a win at all costs game with judges and instant replay. No thanks.

I would not. To me the heavy fighting is part of the SCA, not the other way around. The pomp that goes with it is a necessary part of the game, just like trying to make your kit look period for your persona and the research that goes into the fighting styles that you use.
